Sr Engineer, Process

Position Title: Senior Process Engineer 
 
Location: Plymouth Mill, On-Site 
 
Reports to: Fiberline Superintendent
 
The Process Engineer is responsible for utilizing process knowledge and data analysis to lead and implement changes to standard operating procedures, chemicals or equipment, to reduce costs, increase productivity and improve quality in safe and environmentally responsible ways. Provide technical support to operating areas in development of new products, equipment selection and justification for capital improvements as well as implementation of corporate initiatives. Utilizes high level of process knowledge and experience to provide direction and training to less experienced engineers, co-ops, and technicians on a regular basis. 
The ideal candidate will build effective, trusting business relationships and partnerships across the organization to execute the implementation of plans supporting the company’s strategic business direction in alignment with Domtar’s core values. 
 
Job Responsibilities/Accountabilities:
 
  • Support high Quality product standards and works to reduce product variability. 
  • Support New Product Development by sharing knowledge and assisting with trials 
  • Provide technical assistance to the Production areas 
  • Interface with outside technical resources and suppliers to initiate cost reduction, quality enhancement, and process improvement trials. 
  • Build positive relationships with the hourly workforce and provide technical training on process improvements and process changes that impact safety, quality, costs, operations, and efficiencies 
  • Work with Maintenance Coordinator and Engineering to plan and execute shutdowns. 
  • Identify repairs and improvements needed and work in conjunction with the Maintenance Coordinator to maintain equipment at its highest level of reliability and availability. 
  • Take initiative to analyze process data, without express direction, to identify and determine causes of nonstandard operation (Examples: low productivity, high water use, excessive downtime), and assist junior engineers in identifying these conditions. Expected outcomes include clear explanation of cause of nonstandard operation presented to manufacturing as well as recommendation and implementation of corrective actions to bring operation back to standard. 
  • Decide course of work during the workday and week. Set priorities and direction (self and others) for projects and time required to meet established deadlines. Determine scope and resources required to successfully complete project. 
  • Identify process areas needing improvement, and decide how chemical and product trials should proceed and how results of the trial should be evaluated 
 
Key Skills: 
  • Coach and mentor less experienced engineers; check the quality of their work, and help them resolve problems 
  • Evaluate a process’s efficiency, effectiveness, quality, and safety with the ultimate goal being to make a process efficient and less costly. 
  • Process variability Identification and Correction 
  • Extensive knowledge of pulping and bleaching processes, process controls and plant information systems.  
 
Required Professional Experience/Qualifications:  
 
  • Extensive paper/pulp production knowledge and leadership skills, and five year's minimum related job experience or the equivalent is necessary to perform this job; 
  • Has led improvement and optimization projects. 
 
Preferred Professional Experience/Qualifications: 
 
  • A Bachelor's Degree is preferred but not required. 
  • Has led Bargaining Unit (Union) Employees. 
  • Minitab and Parkview experience preferred.
