Job Description:

The Weitzenhoffer College of Fine Arts and University Theatre produces nine shows a season ranging from dramas and dance to opera and musicals. We are proud of the high standards and variety of productions as well as the opportunities for our students in various design and production roles. Our Draper/Cutter is an integral part of that process as they are responsible for all aspects of the construction process for the creation of costumes on all these unique and exciting presentations. Our Draper/Cutter will perform fittings; lead alterations and refurbishment of costumes from our extensive stock as well as maintaining pulled or rented clothing items. Our talented professional staff are committed to maintaining and investing in a thriving costume studio that meets or exceeds industry expectations. We welcome applications from those self-motivated and collaborative individuals who also have a strong work ethic, time management and workflow management skills, and excellent interpersonal communication skills. There are some weekend and evening calls, so a flexible schedule is important. There may be other duties as assigned and discussed.

Job Requirements:

Required Education:

  • Bachelor Degree AND:
  • 12 months of professional theatre experience in a costume shop.

Equivalency:

  • Will accept 48 months of related experience in lieu of the Bachelor's degree for a total of 60 months of related experience.

Skills:

  • Able to communicate well and build rapport quickly with students, faculty, and staff
  • Working knowledge of theatrical costuming practices and techniques
  • Costume construction skills
  • Proficiency and accuracy sewing with an industrial sewing machine, Serger, and blind hemmer
  • Proficiency and accuracy in hand stitching
  • General knowledge of patterning and cutting for period and modern garments
  • Strong initiative to solve problems
  • Able to complete work within deadlines
  • Ability to accurately read and understand written materials and instructions

Advertised Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to stand for extended periods; lift up to 50 lbs and be able to kneel and/or stoop for short periods, and engage in repetitive motions.

Departmental Preferences:

  • Master's degree in costume technology
  • Experience in construction of dancewear
  • Tailoring experience
  • Worked or trained in a professional costume shop a minimum of five years
  • Knowledge or experience with computer aided design programs

Certifications or Licences:

  • Valid Driver's License required to travel to fabric shops and pick up materials for costumes and/or props

Supervision:

  • Student Group
