Job Description

The New York Times Audio team is hiring an editor to play a key role in defining the editorial approach and direction of The Daily. The team behind The Daily gives listeners everything they need to know about one story to start each day, and that includes quick-turn daily news segments and complicated narratives (that are often produced over several days). The editor needs to be highly skilled at every aspect of editing — from structuring an episode, pacing and line editing to noting the stray breath that should be cut and the piece of music that comes in one beat too late.
The editor must have a keen understanding of the news as well as a desire to challenge the conventional ways of telling it. The right candidate is an autonomous, curious, creative thinker who is excited to build and evolve the sound of The New York Times and thrives in collaborative, deadline-driven environments. The editor will work with and guide producers in determining what stories we tell and which reporters we work with, and in defining our angle and the level of production and resourcing required.
Responsibilities:
  • Working with team leadership and hosts to set the editorial agenda for the day.
  • Working closely with Times reporters and editors in developing story ideas for the show.
  • Contributing, along with team leadership, to editorial selection, writing and structure.
  • Contributing thoughts and input to coverage planning.
  • Helping guide and doing final edits of scripts before interviews.
  • Coaching New York Times reporters and editors without audio experience.
  • Editing episodes, both tight turnarounds for daily news (possibly on an evening or night schedule) and longer-term productions.
  • May have input into staffing decisions and will be required to assess performance and provide feedback to staff.
  • Guiding producers in the production of episodes.
  • Working closely with the host as the interviews are happening.

Basic Qualifications:
  • At least five years experience in audio production.
  • At least three years of story editing experience.
  • Some fluency in audio editing, ideally using Pro Tools.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Sound news judgment
  • A passion for narrative storytelling.
  • Experience in building and editing complex narratives in audio.
  • Ability to think creatively about how to make smart audio shows that will get listeners hooked.
  • Able to quickly identify problems with story structure & tape.
  • Communicate notes & feedback clearly and compassionately.
  • Willingness and ability to use data to inform decisions.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Well-developed and adaptive cultural competence and emotional intelligence.
  • Experience in a deadline-driven environment.
  • Proven understanding of music scoring and sound design techniques and strategies.
  • Eagerness to create the best work possible.
  • Believes in The New York Times’ mission and is dedicated to being a part of our innovation and growth.
  • Able to uphold the existing editorial standards of The Times.
The annual base pay range for this role is between $112,000.00 and $130,000.00.
