Job Description

We are seeking an experienced journalist and manager to lead Culture and Careers, a department dedicated to ensuring that our newsroom is the best place for journalists to work.
Since its inception two years ago as part of our newsroom action plan, Culture and Careers has become a hub for developing early career journalists, recruiting and building out our talent pipeline at all levels, guiding the careers of those within our newsroom, and training us up on skills that are a priority. In addition, the team is dedicated to setting an intentional culture within the newsroom, for example encouraging clear, actionable feedback via the performance evaluation process, guiding each department to set goals and communicating clearly and consistently with our overall newsroom. It goes without saying that Culture and Careers is a significant partner in executing the strategies and priorities of the company’s human resources organization. This leadership role reports to Monica Drake, deputy managing editor.
The ideal candidate is attuned to the talent required to put out our ambitious report and is adept at building and sustaining relationships with journalists and staff at all levels of the organization and beyond. This person should also have experience as a senior leader at a major news organization, familiar with what it takes to produce a range of storyforms. This person will work to ensure that newsroom leadership delivers on its commitment to transforming the way we manage people, from how we recruit and hire, how we grow and develop, and how we drive accountability to our values and behaviors.
The head of Culture and Careers must have experience, with a proven track record, as a people manager who can motivate a multi-functional team to produce work that will define the future of our newsroom. Their management of the team – and their ability to build in transparency, a culture of feedback and collegiality – should serve as a model to managers throughout the newsroom.

Responsibilities:
  • Manage a team of high-performing Culture and Careers leaders.
  • Develop and implement staffing strategy across the newsroom, both internally and externally, in partnership with newsroom leadership and HR.
  • Partner with HR on company-wide priorities, including the performance process and fostering a culture that supports a healthy and engaging workplace.
  • Establish a clear process for setting newsroom goals specific to people initiatives, including those around diversity, equity and inclusion.
  • Use data to inform our progress in hiring, retention and promotions.
  • Partner with Culture and Communications to ensure clear and succinct communications specifically for a newsroom audience.
  • Consult with other relevant business units outside of the newsroom, including Opinion and subscription brand editorial teams.
Basic Qualifications:
  • 15+ years experience in a newsroom leadership role.
  • A proven track record of managing people and leading effective teams.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and deliver on major strategic initiatives.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Ability to lead with empathy, an open mind and with a positive attitude.
  • Solutions-oriented, with a creative approach to problem solving.
  • Strong understanding of people operations and an interest in development talent.
  • Flexible work style and able to adapt quickly to keep up with the fast-paced environment of an evolving newsroom.
  • Committed to The New York Times mission and values and behaviors, and to being a driving force for good.
The annual base pay range for this role is between $200,000.00 and $250,000.00.
