Editorial Assistant

To meet the needs of the Church, we seek to build teams that represent the diverse perspectives, life experiences, and backgrounds of our global Church membership. With that in mind, we encourage all qualified applicants to apply.

The purpose of this job is to assist the Church History Department in helping God’s children make and keep sacred covenants—specifically by helping prepare Church history materials for publication.

The Publications Division of the Church History Department publishes Church history for Church members and scholars. Recent publications include The Joseph Smith Papers (print, web, ebooks, podcasts), Saints: The Story of the Church of Jesus Christ in the Latter Days (print, web, app, podcasts), and the Diaries of Emmeline B. Wells (web). Many of the division’s publications are published under the imprint of the Church Historian’s Press.

The Publications Division seeks an Editorial Assistant to help with production tasks on current publishing projects. This is a part-time, non-benefitted position. The Editorial Assistant will work as part of a large team of editors, historians, archivists, and writers. This is a rare opportunity to learn about Latter-day Saint history, work with primary sources, significantly contribute to production processes, and acquire a variety of new skills relating to both print and electronic publishing.

Responsibilities will include securing intellectual property permissions and privacy releases, assisting in getting material accessioned in the Church History Library collections, transcribing original documents, migrating content from Microsoft Word to HTML or XML, performing quality-assurance checks of digital material prior to publication, maintaining content management systems, and helping coordinate biographical/genealogical research. Additional responsibilities may be given, depending on project needs and individual interests and capabilities.

  • Bachelor’s degree in English, editing, or a related field.
  • Experience with electronic publishing or programming languages (such as XML or HTML) preferred but not required.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to write clearly and to proofread carefully.
  • Ability to learn new technology and processes.
  • Familiarity with intellectual property guidelines and processes a plus.
  • Knowledge of early Church history and a familiarity with sources of Latter-day Saint history a plus.
