Engineering Manager, Inventors

ROLE OVERVIEW

Benchling is on a mission to accelerate the pace of life sciences research. To do that, we build a suite of tools that scientists use daily to solve humanity's most pressing problems. Some of these tools help scientists better collaborate—like our electronic lab notebook & workflow product. Others help scientists do their research—like our molecular biology suite, which scientists use to analyze & work with DNA. All of the tools that we build require that the data in Benchling reflects the actions that scientists are taking in the physical world. That's where the Inventors team comes in.

The Inventors team makes it easy to keep Benchling up-to-date with scientists' actions in the biotech lab. To do this, we build APIs and UI, which lets users easily update Benchling data as scientists take action in the lab. For example, when scientists receive a shipment of materials, they may use our bulk import UI to register all of those materials, and their location in the lab, within Benchling. Across all of our surfaces, we focus on making our users as productive as possible.

As the engineering manager for the Inventors team, you'll work closely with product and design (and our customers!) to define the team's roadmap in this role. We're particularly excited to hear from managers with a track record of obsessing over customer needs and product quality as they build their roadmaps and guide their team's execution.

YOUR IMPACT

• Recruit, develop, and lead a team of exceptional product engineers.
• Partner closely with product and design to define the team's roadmap and long-term product strategy.
• Hold an unreasonably high bar for product quality as the team executes its work.
• Meet with customers to understand their science & what they need from Benchling.
• Contribute to engineering-wide organizational improvements as part of the management team.

ABOUT YOU

• 1+ years of experience managing high-performing engineering teams.
• You have managed geographically distributed engineering teams that were responsible for a productivity-focused product.
• You have mentored early-to-mid-career engineers into leaders with company-wide impact.
• You have experience (and enjoy!) working directly with customers to inform your team's roadmap.
• You are a very product-focused engineering manager. The products we are building are complex, and a strong engineering manager will be expected to drive significant product decisions.
