Entry Level Mechanical Engineer

We are searching for a Mechanical Engineer or internship studying Mechanical Engineering, having or looking for systems/application experience. Knowledge of electrical systems and software/programing is a plus. Applicants from other industries, e.g., automotive, high-rise steel or bridge construction are also a plus. This is a prime opportunity with the advantage of creative, hands-on work which allow the candidate to expand their technical skills while contributing directly to new product development.

As GCS is a fast and steadily growing company, this position offers the ability to play an integral role in the success of the business. In this role, the candidate will work within the research and development team to identify potential issues, develop solutions, and design new methods and systems to reduce materials and labor time for assemblies. The qualified candidate will assist in designing, conducting, and analyzing tests for a wide variety of solar racking products. The candidate will also be responsible for conducting testing on prototype and production samples from vendors in order to verify manufacturing quality and overall unit performance.

Within this role, the candidate will help design components as part of new and existing structural systems based on education and experience in relation to: systems and applications, mechanical loadings, energy fundamentals/thermodynamics and solar technology. The candidate must be able to understand large scale utility solar installations and the fundamental principles behind their design. The candidate must also be able to read prints and make revisions as necessary during the design process. This position will also require the candidate to physically build and test concepts and designs.


Responsibilities:
  • This position is both outdoor/indoor. You MUST be comfortable working in all-weather elements.
  • Comply with all OSHA, state and federal code requirements, job site and construction safety procedures.
  • Create project plans for solar energy system development, monitoring, and evaluation activities.
  • Create or coordinate the creation of photovoltaic (PV) structural systems, including system components.
  • Create mechanical diagrams, connection diagrams for solar structural systems, using CAD.
  • Evaluate specifications, recommend engineering or manufacturing changes to complete solar design goals.
  • Develop design specifications and functional requirements for solar energy systems or components.
  • Provide technical guidance and support to installation/engineering teams during installation, i.e., start-up, testing, system commissioning, or performance monitoring.
  • Develop SOPs, quality or safety standards for solar installation implementation.
  • Conduct testing as designed in accordance with improvement goals.
  • Create reports of findings for testing completed.
  • Improve existing systems of data collection, organization of results and accessibility for analyses .
  • Monitor production samples from vendors, inspecting for quality of manufacturing and accuracy during testing.
  • Develop assembly methods and practices for installations and inspection of solar installation projects.
  • Test and evaluate photovoltaic (PV) Structural systems.
  • Perform required cost reduction, stress and thermal analysis for solar systems.
  • Demonstrate creativity in identifying solutions and root causes during analysis.
  • Working with complex multi-layered problems, recreate field project issues, troubleshoot, and correct them in a timely manner.
  • Assist management to complete task assignments in a timely manner, and request resources as needed.
  • Tasks may include travel to other sites within driving distance with management or independently as needed.
  • Ability to work both as a team member or independently, and at times able to work under pressure.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment. PPE is required onsite.
Required Experience & Skills:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
  • PE License for Massachusetts - other states a PLUS. Not a requirement but very useful.
  • Systems/Applications - Mechanical field experience or willingness to learn.
  • Ability to read prints.
  • Strong computer software, hardware and networking skills: MS Office applications (Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint & Word).
  • Programing experience, C Language or Linux, PCB testing and troubleshooting is a plus but not critical.
  • Analytical or scientific software including simulation software also a plus but not critical.
  • SolidWorks for modeling and running Finite Element Analysis (FEA) on new design work.
  • MathWorks MATLAB.
  • Development environment software - National Instruments LabVIEW.
  • Some construction, solar and knowledge of key trades and tools preferred.
  • Computer aided design CAD software: Autodesk AutoCAD/Autodesk AutoCAD LT, SolidWorks.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent problem solving, critical thinking skills and ability to work independently.
  • High level of integrity with strong emphasis on making and meeting commitments.
  • High sense of urgency with the ability to prioritize to meet required deadlines.
  • US Driver’s License – must be clean and valid.
  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
  • OSHA 10 certification, additional certifications a plus.
  • MA Hoisting Engineer 2A and 1C Licenses also a plus but not required.
