Scientist / Senior Scientist, Protein Chemistry

Position Summary - Eyconis is seeking an exceptional protein chemist to join our team and take a key role in bioconjugation discovery and development activities.

The ideal candidate will have a broad bio-organic chemistry background and ability to apply modern bioconjugation and purification tools in a practical setting. This role will be responsible for executing in-house bioconjugation discovery and development, downstream purification and scale up activities, as well as providing technical support for GMP manufacturing at partner CMOs. This person will play a critical role in working collaboratively in a cross-functional team with Analytical Development, Quality and Regulatory to support advancing of Eyconis product candidates to clinical studies. This role reports to the Vice President, Development Chemistry.

Primary Responsibilities This Role Includes:

  • Design, synthesis and optimization of protein-linker bioconjugates in support of discovery and development of novel therapeutics for ophthalmology
  • Develop bioconjugation strategies. Process development and optimization for scale up and production.
  • Hands-on execution of chromatographic purifications (affinity, hydrophobic interactions, size exclusion and ion exchange chromatography, etc.), membrane filtrations (normal and tangential flow filtration), buffer exchange, conjugation reaction work-up.
  • Apply, develop, and optimize bioanalytical characterization (HPLC, LC-MS, MALDI, SEC-MALS, etc.) for bioconjugate products.
  • Serve as bioconjugation SME and work closely with cross-functional project teams to provide technical support to internal and external partners.
  • Maintain detailed lab experimental records.
  • Perform data analysis, interpret, and present results at project meetings.
  • Author CMC sections of regulatory filings, patent applications and manuscripts as needed.
  • Other responsibilities as required according to corporate strategy or group needs.

Successful Candidates Will Meet Most of These Knowledge, Skills and Experience Criteria:

  • PhD in biochemistry or related field with 2+ years of relevant experience for Scientist level and 5 years for Sr. Scientist level. B.S. or M.S. with 5+ years of relevant experience and proven achievement in bioconjugation will also be considered.
  • Proficiency of bioconjugation reactions, related techniques, and approaches.
  • Knowledge of strategies for the optimization of bioprocesses and experimental design (DoE).
  • Hands-on experience with preparative chromatography systems and equipment (AKTA, SEC, FPLC, IEX, affinity) and flow filtration (TFF, UF/DF etc.).
  • Knowledge of / experience with protein bioanalytical techniques (HPLC, LC-MS, UV, MALDI, SECMALS, peptide map, capillary electrophoresis, etc.).
  • Excellent laboratory and organizational skills. • Ability to work effectively under tight timelines.
  • Good knowledge of cGMP manufacturing, ICH guidelines, regulatory and quality requirements.
  • Effective team player with an open mindset and excellent oral/written communication skills.
  • Travel may be required up to 15% of the time domestically and internationally as needed.

Expected Salary Range and Benefits summary

  • The base pay range for this position is expected to be $125,000 - $160, 000 annually.
  • Base pay offered may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, capabilities, and experience.
