Job Summary:The Department of Surgery at The University of Wisconsin is recruiting an exceptional surgeon-scientist to serve as the Director of The Wisconsin Surgical Outcomes Research Program (WiSOR). WiSOR is our nationally leading health services research (HSR) center that is committed to the mission of improving the quality, safety, effectiveness, and efficiency of surgical care through research and innovation. The Department also trains more than 70 residents and fellows and is consistently ranked amongst the top surgery programs with extramural research funding, currently 12th in the nation according to Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research. The Department's Office of Clinical Research provides robust support for Clinical Trials as well regulatory support for research, and the grants management team provides comprehensive pre-award to post- award support. The Surgical Collaborative of Wisconsin also provides access to a network of surgeons throughout the state and this platform provides opportunities for collaborative quality improvement that improves the care of surgical patients throughout the state and region.Responsibilities:As a leader within the Surgical Health Services Research Program, clinical responsibilities will account for 25-50% of this appointment. You will be expected to provide high-quality, patient-centered surgical care within your specialty. Engage in interdisciplinary clinical collaborations, ensuring the integration of evidence-based practices into patient care and outcomes.The selected finalist will be able to lead and conduct innovative research (Develop and execute nationally competitive health services research projects that focus on surgical outcomes, healthcare disparities, cost-effectiveness, and healthcare policy. Engage in high-impact publications, secure extramural funding (e.g., NIH, AHRQ, PCORI), and contribute to the academic body of knowledge in surgical health servicesThis position will require the successful candidate to mentor and teach medical students, residents, and fellows, fostering their growth in surgical health services research. Contribute to graduate-level teaching in healthcare research methodologies, clinical outcomes, and health policy..Administrative and Leadership duties will include:- Faculty development, connecting them with funding resources and facilitating professional growth- Building and maintaining shared resources- Mentoring junior faculty, providing guidance and support, particularly for those pursing K awards or other early-career funding opportunities- Identify strategic needs and positions within WiSOR.
