Firefighter Recruits are trained for fire suppression, emergency medical treatment, and hazard mitigation work in the Fire Department. Recruits are sent to the Phoenix Fire Department Training Academy for 14-16 weeks of basic recruit training followed by approximately nine months of structured probationary training and evaluation. Basic recruit training covers firefighting operations, emergency medical and transportation services, physical fitness, and other related subjects. After successfully completing the Academy, recruits become probationary firefighters.
Fire Recruit salary is $24.34 hourly/$50,627 annually. Upon successful completion of the academy, the Firefighter salary range is $51,854 - $76,626 annually.

This recruitment and any interview process as a result of this recruitment may be used by multiple hiring managers and multiple departments throughout the City to fill any related current or future vacancies; other recruitments and appropriate eligible lists may also be considered.
STEP 1:
Register for the exam. Apply online and complete the required information (a resume is not required). An online application MUST be completed in order to attend the written exam.
You MUST have applied online and received an email invitation in order to be admitted into the exam. If you do not receive your exam invitation email by Tuesday, August 15, 2023, please call 602-534-2827. Please do not call before August 15th for exam information.
STEP 2:
Study for the exam. Download and review the 2023 Firefighter Recruit Study Guide before the exam. This document will remain on the Phoenix Fire Department Recruitment webpage until the written exam.
STEP 3:
Take the written exam. The multiple-choice written exam is scheduled for Tuesday, August 22, 2023, at the Phoenix Convention Center located at 100 N. 3 rd Street, Phoenix, AZ, 85004.
Most of the test questions will be derived from the 2023 Firefighter Recruit Study Guide.
The remaining test questions will consist of reading comprehension, basic math, and mechanical aptitude. Previous scores cannot be reused.

Hard copies can be submitted to the City's Human Resources Center. Request for an accommodation need to be completed and returned by August 14, 2023, detailing your request for accommodation for the Firefighter Recruit Written Exam.
