Fleet Division - Equipment Service Worker II

The Public Works Department strives to improve the quality of life in Phoenix through efficient delivery of outstanding solid waste, fleet, facilities, and energy management services.

Equipment Service Worker II's perform skilled servicing, mechanical maintenance, and minor repair of automotive, heavy duty, and other motorized equipment. Duties include performing routine servicing and maintenance of engines, transmissions, chassis, air conditioning, and tune ups; repairing and replacement of wheel bearings, brakes, balancing tires and wheels; and patching and repairing tires.

Work also involves maintaining service parts and inventory records, and installing and fabricating City decals, light bar kits, arrow boards, dash switches, electrical wiring, gauges, and other equipment and components.

IDEAL CANDIDATE

  • General knowledge of all vehicular systems including but not limited to engine, transmission, chassis, air conditioning, hydraulics, electrical, and tune up.
  • Fundamentally sound in metal working to include MIG welding and the use of an oxy-acetylene torch.
  • Ability to perform vehicle maintenance on both light and heavy-duty fleets.

SALARY


Pay Range: $19.54 to $30.31 per hour

Hiring Range: $19.54 to $28.86 per hour

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Two years of experience in automotive servicing, maintenance, and repair of vehicular equipment.
  • Other combinations of experience and education which meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
  • Requires:
    • Working outside in a variety of environmental extremes such as heat, cold, rain, air pollution, and dust.
    • Working in cramped areas while bending and stooping repeatedly.
    • Moving objects weighing up to 50 lbs.
  • May be scheduled to work irregular hours, second and/or third shifts, weekends, holidays, and evenings.

  • This position requires the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.
  • In addition, individuals may be required to pass an Arizona Department of Transportation physical exam and possess the appropriate commercial driver's license (CDL).
  • Pre-employment drug testing is required for CDL positions. Employees in CDL positions will be subject to unannounced alcohol and drug testing as a condition of continued employment.
  • This position is subject to Criminal Justice Information Systems (CJIS) background standards. Candidates who receive a conditional offer of employment must be fingerprinted and will have their fingerprints used to check the Criminal History Records of the State of Arizona Department of Public Safety and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Any records returned will be reviewed to determine the candidate’s suitability for the job.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS


The minimum qualifications listed above, plus:

  • Experience maintaining small equipment (i.e. lawnmowers, weed eaters, and other small construction equipment).
  • Experience in inspecting, diagnosing, and repairing of vehicle systems.
  • Experience in hydraulic service and repair.
  • Experience in metal working that includes MIG welding and the use of an oxy-acetylene torch
  • Experience in the diagnostics and repair of air conditioning systems.
  • Automotive Service Equipment (ASE) Certifications in either light duty automotive or heavy equipment.
  • Hold a valid Section 609 air condition certification.
