Position Summary:
The Food Service Worker is responsible for various tasks related to the Dining Service operations at Ithaca College. These tasks are wide-ranging depending on the dining unit. They may include assisting in preparing, presenting, and serving various hot and cold food items for various meal periods, serving as a barista or bartender, working at catering events, or acting as a cashier in campus dining locations. The position is considered to be essential during emergency situations and the incumbent is subject to being requested to report to work.
Supervision:
This position reports to the unit supervisor, assistant manager, or manager. This position reports to the unit manager for their campus area for all administrative business operations.
Responsibilities:
Provide outstanding customer service to students, staff, faculty, and guests.
Learn and adhere to all food preparation guidelines established by the culinary leadership team for Ithaca College Dining Services.
Prepare food under supervision per current applicable federal, state, and cultural standards, as well as guidelines and regulations to yield high-quality food service.
Set up workstations for every meal with all the necessary ingredients and equipment.
Safely utilize and operate various utensils, including knives and equipment such as ovens, stoves, slicers, mixers, etc.
Taste products, read menus, estimate food requirements, check production, and keep records to plan production accurately.
Clean and sanitize all workstations and equipment and follow all Ithaca College and regulatory rules and procedures.
Educate customers by presenting and explaining menu items, retail offerings, or catering services.
Operate a variety of point-of-sale equipment in residential and retail locations.
Develop and demonstrate multicultural awareness and cultivate an inclusive, diverse, and respectful Ithaca College community. Demonstrate civil and inclusive behavior when interacting with staff, faculty, students, and visitors to the College. Promote a flexible, collaborative, and inclusive work and living environment and engage in educational opportunities to increase awareness and understanding of diversity and inclusion.
Qualifications:
Previous experience working in a food service operation or other relevant retail setting is required. Previous work in a college/university setting, a restaurant, or other relevant establishment is preferred. The ability to adhere to all food preparation and service standards set by Ithaca College Dining Services staff is required. Good interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to provide excellent customer service while working effectively and respectfully within a diverse and inclusive environment are strongly preferred. The Food Service Worker may be required to obtain food safety certification upon hire.
Work Environment:
The Food Service Worker completes work within an accessible, safe, indoor, and occasional outdoor environment. Extended periods of walking, standing, bending, and carrying moderately heavy items (up to 50 pounds) may be necessary. The Food Service Worker will be issued and/or required to wear slip-resistant shoes, cut gloves, and operate kitchen equipment. The Food Service Worker will be required to work overtime, nights and weekends, and various holidays as needed.
