Test & Reliability Engineer | Triage and Support

What We Do

Gecko Robotics is helping the world’s most important organizations ensure the availability, reliability, and sustainability of critical infrastructure. Gecko's complete and connected solutions combine wall-climbing robots, industry-leading sensors, and an AI-powered data platform to provide customers with a unique window into the current and future health of their physical assets. This enables real-time decision making to increase the efficiency and safety of operations, promote mission readiness, and protect the environment and civilization from the effects of infrastructure failure.

Role at a Glance

As Gecko continues to expand the number and diversity of robotic systems, the Robotics department is expanding our teams that are responsible for ensuring our systems have been designed, built, tested and maintained with the highest standards possible.  The Engineers and Technicians that work in these roles are focused on the overall system performance of our solutions and are responsible for maintaining strong relationships across multiple teams as well as have a strong technical understanding of both the as-designed/as-built product and the operational/working environment our systems are deployed into.  This is a very hands-on team that works across all phases of the product life cycle.

The Test & Reliability (T&R) team is currently a team of strong generalists, but as we grow we are looking to introduce some specialization into the team in certain core disciplines, one of those being Triage and Support. This discipline monitors and tracks field performance and issues raised (by Operators or in robot logs); leads failure and root cause analysis (RCA) investigations and drives corrective actions working with other Engineers and Operations teams; tacks long term performance and reliability of our systems and proposes functional changes/improvements.

Candidates will be evaluated primarily in the area of Triage and Support, but also for the breadth of skills needed to be successful in the Test & Reliability team,

Gecko’s engineers work in a hands-on, fast-paced environment.  We’re seeking self-motivated individuals who thrive in a small company environment and are passionate about developing great products which solve significant problems.

What you will do

  • Work in the Robotics organization as a system expert able to help plan and prioritize work that improves the utility of the systems we build and release

  • Become an expert in the operation and use of our systems and serve as a liaison and advisor  to Operations and the development teams

  • Build an understanding of the operational domain for our systems and the non-destructive testing (NDT) techniques and technologies we employ

  • Set standards for maintaining fleets of robots and work with Operations support teams to ensure the operational readiness of the fleets

  • Travel to local (Pittsburgh) test facilities and remote (mostly within the US) customer sites to perform field testing/evaluations as part of the design and development process and as needed to build operational familiarity

In the role of Triage and Support,

  • Be an expert at diagnosing customer/field reported issues providing workarounds/resolutions in the moment

  • Perform Root Cause Analysis of issues and work to quickly provide robust solutions to prevent future issues

  • Analyze robot data and log information to assist in troubleshooting, to look for operational trends and recurring issues, and to monitor the reliability of our robotic systems and propose improvements

  • Utilize data analytics to analyze and diagnose a wide range of system faults and errors related to hardware, software, and sensor data both for in-house testing and at customer sites

  • Effectively categorize and prioritize issues based on severity, urgency, and potential impact on safety and performance by working collaboratively with cross-functional teams (engineering, software, testing, operations)

  • Optimize and implement Triage processes, collaborate with data platforms, test automation, infrastructure and tooling teams for functional user requirements

About You

Required Skills

  • B.S. degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Software Engineering or related field of study or equivalent work experience

  • 5+ years of related testing experience

  • Experience with failure analysis techniques

  • Experience with root cause analysis and corrective action processes

  • Experience with reliability testing methods including environmental chamber - programming and operation, mechanical testing, and electrical testing of consumer electronics

  • Strong problem-solving skills with a methodical approach to troubleshooting

  • Able to be hands on our robotic hardware and software systems with sufficient depth to build trust inside of Engineering and understand cross Engineering trade-offs and approaches

  • Experience working with and debugging electro-mechanical systems and software

  • Experience in data analysis and utilizing programming languages to extract data insights

  • Experience using issue tracking and configuration management tools

Preferred Skills

  • 7+ years experience in test planning and execution for evaluation of hardware performance.

  • 3+ years experience in performing triage and support activities

  • Experience performing system analysis and integration

  • Proficiency in debugging software and electro-mehcanical systems
