Product Analytics Lead

Who We Are?

In a world where political polarization and media distrust are at an all-time high, Ground News offers people a better way to stay informed and open-minded. Our mobile app, web app, and browser extension are home to a community of mindful newsreaders who use our news comparison platform to easily see every side of a story and engage with news beyond their filter bubble.

Unlike most news companies, our audience and our values do not align with any specific political ideology. Unlike most tech platforms, we don’t use manipulative algorithms to keep users on our platform to sell more ads.

We are supported by our readers who pay for a subscription to build a more nuanced understanding of the news, the world, and themselves.

The Opportunity: Product Analytics Lead (Remote - Canada)

The Product Analytics team will build the data foundation for reporting, analysis, experimentation, and machine learning at Ground News. We are looking for someone with expertise in metric development, product analytics, data modeling, and SQL. Using these tools, you will transform raw data into an analytics layer that powers decision-making at the company (e.g., metrics, dashboards, ad hoc analysis, tables, A/B tests).

You will partner with product, platform engineers, and business leads to architect new data models, audit logging schemas, build metrics, and work with orchestration frameworks like AWS Glue, AWS Step Functions, AWS Lambda, or Dagster. The data models and metrics you build will help us understand how Ground News' unique content and features make understanding news easy.

What You’ll Do:

  • Conduct exploratory analysis to address high-impact, open-ended questions that are key to Ground News’ product strategy

  • Analyze and model the impact of product decisions that are easy to share and interpret, rather than relying on advanced analytics tools like Machine Learning

  • Develop and improve standardized metrics to understand user behavior and key business metrics

  • Build new data pipelines to power these metrics by navigating complex schemas and large data sets

  • Create intuitive visualizations and dashboards with an eye towards useful insights

  • Lead design, launch, and analysis of various tests across our ecosystem

  • Monitor topline trends to inform and shape the team roadmap

  • Create and contribute to a documentation-first data culture

What You’ll Have:

  • Bachelor's degree in a quantitative field or commensurate work experience

  • 2-5 years of experience in analytics, data science, management consulting, or related fields

  • Experience with LookML and 3rd party BI tools (Looker, Tableau, Superset, etc); experience with dbt is a plus

  • Experience crafting compelling stories based on data and driving decision-making with business stakeholders

  • Passion for high data quality and scaling product analytics or data science work

  • Advanced SQL and familiarity with ETL/ELT in a cloud-based data warehousing environment (AWS Redshift, BigQuery, Snowflake, etc)

  • Experience with AWS cloud services and environments, including AWS Glue, AWS Lambda, and AWS Step Functions

  • Strong ability to condense complex concepts and analysis into clear and concise takeaways that drive action

  • Ability to conduct intermediate statistical analysis to inform business decisions, with directional accuracy

  • Strong communication, documentation, and data visualization skills

Excellent candidates will also have:

  • Passion for news and information or great experience in content analytics

  • Experience with digital subscriptions or in-app purchase mobile businesses

  • Experience cleaning, analyzing, and visualizing data using tools such as Python or R

  • Knowledge of Apache Spark and data warehouse table formats like Apache Iceberg and Apache Hudi

  • Experience with orchestration tools like Dagster

  • An eye for design when it comes to dashboards and visualization tools

  • Familiarity with experimentation and machine learning techniques
