Harlem Children’s Zone (HCZ) — a world-renowned education and poverty-fighting organization based in New York — seeks an enthusiastic, dedicated, and mission aligned Lead Field Maintenance (Handyman) with the Promise Academy Kitchen Department.
The Lead Field Maintenance (Handyman) will bring a passion for the mission of Harlem Children’s Zone: break the cycle of intergenerational poverty with comprehensive, on-the-ground programming that builds up opportunities for children and families to thrive in school, work, and life.
The Harlem Children’s Zone is currently seeking a Lead Field Maintenance (Handyman) in their Facilities Department. Under the direction of the Director, Lead Field Maintenance will be responsible for maintaining the proper working order of the building’s major systems (Plumbing, HVAC, Elevator and all mechanical systems), service requests, and grounds areas as needed and/or assigned for the purpose of providing an effective working/learning environment. The ideal candidate must ensure that the assigned site(s) service request is completed to the standard set by HCZ and other regulatory agencies (Health Department, Board of Ed).

Minimum Qualifications
· Must have a high school diploma or GED equivalent
· Four years of experience that demonstrates journey-level skills in assigned areas (Carpentry, HVAC, Plumbing, Electrical, Supervision, Mechanical assessments, Blueprints, and ability to make repairs)
· Fireguard Certifications (S95, W7, S12, S13, F03)
Who You Are
· Ability and skill to use manual and power tools for repairs/installations.
· Must be able to perform physical activities that require you to lift, push, pull or carry heavy/large objects.
What You’ll Do
· Leads, plans, trains, and reviews the work of Handyman maintenance staff, participates in the most complex work of the unit including organizing and assigning work, setting priorities, and following up to ensure coordination and completion of assigned work.
· Utilizes desktop in the process of work request and material or information searches; estimates and equipment required for assigned work. May assist in estimating the time required to complete jobs.
· Performs inspections, and repairs in addition to routine skilled maintenance duties such as electrical, carpentry, painting, locksmithing, HVAC, plumbing, performs other unskilled work as needed such as maintenance worker or porter.
· Oversee the use and care of maintenance equipment throughout the department.
· Oversees, assist, and verifies the work of Handyman staff for accuracy, proper work method’s, techniques, and compliance with applicable standards and specifications, ensuring adherence to safe work environments.
· Performs other duties related to the primary job duties.
· Perform routine daily inspection of building interior/exterior (additional inspections as needed for compliance)
· Communicate with management regarding the need for vendor support and adherence to safety regulations
· Perform emergency/special tasks (i.e. flood response, appliance repair, light renovation, FDNY compliance, ETC)
