Job Title: Hazardous Waste Program Manager

Summary: Management of hazardous waste streams across the organization
Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
1. Identifying, profiling and manifesting of hazardous waste, ensuring safe handling and disposal, keeping compliance of all regulations and safe transportation of hazardous waste. *
2. Write and implement compliance plans and programs: Ensures compliance for acquisition, use, storage, and disposal of hazardous materials and waste, and emergency response procedures; needs, issues, and complexities affecting regulatory compliance; general chemical properties and associated hazards, safe handling procedures, and personal protective equipment. *
3. Provide training in hazardous waste compliance programs for clients. Acts as liaison with hazardous waste treatment facilities. *
4. Analyze and interpret codes, regulations, policies, and procedures; comprehend, interpret and apply Federal, State and local regulations pertaining to hazardous materials and waste and occupational safety associated with hazardous materials*
5. Prepares and implements quality-control checks, environmental remediation activities and/or removal of hazardous and non-hazardous waste from clients' sites*
6. Prepares and implements effective employee training for facility compliance requirements on ongoing basis on safe management of hazardous materials and wastes, occupational safety with regard to hazardous materials, emergency and non-emergency hazardous material spill responses. Keeps appropriate documentation of training. *
7. Understands, interprets and ensures adherence to applicable DOT HazMat regulations. *
8. Answers multi-line telephone, maintains a professional office environment and professional relations with customers and other employees.
9. Maintains current industry knowledge through publications and legislation, and shares pertinent information with personnel as appropriate. *

Education/ Knowledge:
Bachelor's degree in hazardous materials/hazardous waste management, environmental science, one of the physical sciences, or a related field is required. Education and/or experience in compliance and training in the occupational health and safety programs associated with hazardous materials; and work in a college, university, and/or laboratory setting preferred.
Preferred additional knowledge: Chemical laboratory work experience beyond that obtained through undergraduate chemistry laboratory coursework.
Experience:
Four or more years related experience required and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience: coordinating and implementing hazardous materials and waste compliance programs.
Certification Requirements:
Professional certification (e.g., Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM) required, Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), CSP, etc.) is preferred. If professionally certified (e.g., CHMM, CIH, CSP, etc.), certification must be maintained.
License Requirements:
Must possess a valid and an acceptable driving license and record. Hazmat endorsement or willing to obtain.
Language Ability:
Communicate effectively in English; Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
Ability to speak effectively, organize and communicate sensitive and complex technical information
before groups of customers or employees of organization. Maintain cooperative working relationships and demonstrate sensitivity to and respect for a diverse population.
Math Ability:
Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
Reasoning Ability:
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables. Develop creative and practical solutions to complex and difficult problems.
Computer Skills:
To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of word processing software; spreadsheet software; inventory software and internet software.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Has no direct employees, but supervises processes related to the company hazardous waste program and other waste categories to ensure compliance. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include training employees and clients; planning, assigning, and directing work; and resolving problems.
Physical Requirements and Work Environment:
Must be able to perform physical activities, such as, but not limited to, lifting items (up to 50 lbs. unassisted); maneuvering 55 gal. drums using hand truck or drum dolly; maneuvering 15 gal. drums by hand; bending; standing; climbing or walking. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
Position requires frequent work with and potential for exposure to hazardous materials and waste. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to work near moving mechanical parts and outdoor weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment can be loud.
