Team Lead, Mechanical Engineering

LOCATION 

Infleqtion has 4 office locations, operating out of Boulder (Colorado), Madison (Wisconsin), Chicago (Illinois) and Kidlington, Oxford, UK.  

This is a hybrid, full-time position in our Oxford, Kidlington office. Our flexible working policy enables all full-time employees to work up to 2 days a week from home if work permits. 

POSITION SUMMARY 

The role is responsible for the design, specification, and maturation of hardware for a variety of optomechanical products in a R&D and/or manufacturing environment, as well as growing, managing and leading a technical team. We are looking for self-motivated, energetic individual with strong problem solving and technical skills. 

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES 

The duties and responsibilities outlined below include essential functions of the role. Depending on business needs, this role may perform a combination of some or all the following duties.

Project Support 

  • Lead the design, assembly, test cycle for optomechanical products from the component level up through large systems consisting of precisely defined and aligned elements.  
  • Collaborate with physicists and optical, electrical, mechanical, and software engineers to develop mechanical sub-system requirements from top-level requirements. 
  • Identify risk areas and unknowns in the design process and contribute to the project planning to address those risks. 
  • Develop CAD models, drawings, and documentation packages for all designs, as per company product lifecycle processes. 
  • Perform engineering analysis to guide design decisions and communicate that analysis to project leaders both verbally and through clear documentation. 
  • Develop and execute test plans to evaluate mechanical sub-system performance. 
  • Managing engineering requests outside of project plans, as they arise. 
  • Work with production and manufacturing functions to enable the successful transfer of novel components and devices from the engineering function into production. 
  • Resolve production quality issues and act as the engineering decision maker for the PICAS family of products 
  • Lead and contribute to multiple development projects overlapping in time, and in a fast-paced, fast-growing startup environment. 
  • Contribute to technical reviews and project status meetings as the technical design contributor and/or lead. 

Team Ownership 

  • Lead and manage the mechanical design team in the UK office, providing guidance and support to ensure project success. 
  • Identify resourcing requirements within the team; carrying out and organising the interview and onboarding processes. 
  • Ensure the team has the correct tools to carry out best-in-class engineering, including relevant software (SolidWorks licenses and Vault), workshop equipment, and training and development where appropriate. 
  • Day-to-day people management, such as approving holiday requests and managing poor performance through PIPs or other appropriate measures. 
  • Identify and support career progression opportunities for team members both internally and externally. 
  • Foster a culture of a respectful, collaborative, and productive working environment. 
  • Mentor, teach, and supervise team members. 
  • Create, maintain, and oversee the quality of engineering documentation, including technical drawings, mechanical assembly packages, instruction sets, and standard operating procedures. 

Stakeholder Engagement 

  • Collaborate with project stakeholders to ensure project milestones are met by supporting team members in completing engineering tasks successfully and on time, through technical input and workload management of team members. 
  • Identify and propose budgetary requirements to support top-level company initiatives, such as travel and training budget needs. 
  • Advocate for top-level company initiatives, such as the use of the company product lifecycle where appropriate. 
  • Identify and support opportunities to work as a matrix organisation with other functions in Infleqtion offices. 

 

What you’ll bring to the team 

Technical Knowledge 

  • Master's degree or higher in mechanical or other relevant engineering field 
  • Demonstrable experience working in a similar field, including prior technical management/leadership experience 
  • Expertise with SolidWorks software tools 
  • Expertise in precision mechanical system and ideally optomechanical system design 
  • Strong working knowledge in mechanical part/component design 

Experience 

  • Experience of working within a product development lifecycle 
  • Experience of production environments and design for manufacture 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, able to effectively share information with technical and non-technical staff 
  • Excellent collaboration skills, able to work in a team environment where engagement and participation are an expected part of successful job performance 

This position may require access to information protected under U.S. export control laws and regulations, including the Export Administration Regulations (EAR) and the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR). Please note that any offer for employment may be conditioned on authorization to receive software or technology controlled under these U.S. export control laws and regulations without sponsorship for an export license 

TRAVEL 

Up to 20% travel may be required. 

WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS 

Work will normally be performed in an office and laboratory environment and around technical equipment including computers and lasers. Able to sit, stand, bend, lift and carry up to 40 pounds without assistance. Able to efficiently use automated office equipment such as laptops, copiers, and printers; able to effectively engage in communications (via phone, computer, or in-person). Any required Personal Protective Equipment will be provided and must be properly used in accordance with company requirements.
