The Office for Research Advancement (ORA) seeks a full-time in-house Information Graphic Design specialist – a graphics design specialist – to create and present information effectively and efficiently through a variety of visual concepts for grant proposals. The Information Designer and Project Manager will coordinate deliverables from external creative agencies as necessary, project manage design projects on strategic proposals, and develop a self-service library of graphic templates and support materials to support faculty with grant proposal preparation.
The Designer will work with ORA staff to assist faculty and researchers in preparing grant proposals to a broad range of funding agencies. In some situations, this position may also solicit support from outside consultants and vendors to produce illustrations, infographics, and data visualizations to best convey concepts effectively and with clarity. The Information Designer will work with the researcher to create engaging visuals that help illustrate and convey key information – research concept; the components and interrelated parts of the research project; tables that summarize key points of the project; project team organizational charts; timelines to display the project implementation; etc. In some cases, the Information Designer may assist with other presentations, graphics, and website assets.
In addition to creative abilities, the Information Designer should have the ability to understand the overall project at a high level in order to translate the information through visuals that convey the information effectively and accurately. The candidate must have excellent listening and organizational skills and strong written and verbal communication skills. The successful candidate will have expert use of graphics design software such as Adobe Creative Suite, or something equivalent, work well on a team, fuel collaboration and propose ideas that increase the effectiveness of the proposal.
This position will work closely with the ORA team, faculty, and interact with Marketing Communicators and designers affiliated with the Research and Economic Development enterprise, as needed.
The position will report to the Associate Vice President for Research Advancement.
Responsibilities
- Meet with the faculty/researchers and ORA team to understand the overall project and grant proposal requirements and restrictions and establish timelines for drafts and final products they meet proposal submission deadlines.
- Conceptualize required visuals based on discussions with the faculty/researchers and grant proposal requirements.
- Prepare rough drafts and present ideas to the faculty/researchers and ORA team for review and sign-off.
- Develop engaging visuals using appropriate software possibly enlisting the support of illustrators and/or design vendors.
- Help to communicate concepts such as process, anatomy, chronology or hierarchy in the form of flowcharts, organizational diagrams or timelines, clarifying structure, and order.
- Work with faculty/researchers and ORA team to produce the final design visuals on time and within budget (if necessary).
- Test graphics with the ORA team to ensure that it meets proposal guidelines (e.g., space, restrictions, font size, etc.)
- When applicable, leverage UB’s brand guidelines across creative applications and templates.
