Under direct supervision, is responsible for daily accounting activities of detained individuals' funds and personal property; inventories and stores inmates' personal property; establishes and closes trust funds; posts credits and debits; collates newspapers and receipts for delivery; balances cash drawers; returns inmates' personal property; prepares checks and correspondence; responds to questions and inquires; and performs related duties as required.
Duties and Responsibilities
Inventories and logs detained individuals' funds and personal property during booking process and stores items in vault
Establishes detained individuals' trust fund by entering funds personal property computer input
Posts credits and debits such as funds received, commissary items and newspapers to inmates' accounts
Delivers newspapers and account balance receipts to inmates
Balances cash drawers each day at close of shift by computer input
Separates, collates, closes Trust Fund upon release or transfer of inmate from the Adult Detention Center
Prepares checks as required on transfer or otherwise authorized by inmate
Responds to questions and inquires concerning inmates accounts
Performs other duties as required
Minimum Qualifications
High School or General Education Development (GED) certificate, and two (2) years experience in banking, bookkeeping or cash handling; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
Knowledge of account management procedures; by PC application of spreadsheets
Skill in typing 30 wpm with no more than 7 errors;Requires recent typing test administered by Workforce Solutions Alamo Career Centers (Please attach a copy of your typing test results to your online application or fax them to (210) 335-2558 by the closing date.)
Skill in operating personal computer, 10-key calculator by touch and basic office equipment
Ability to balance cash drawer; ability to perform basic mathematical calculations; ability to communicate effectively with diverse groups of individuals utilizing tact and diplomacy; ability to respond to inquiries and complaints; ability to adjust to rapidly fluctuating situations; ability to prepare concise reports when required for responding to courts, County Auditors and other authorized agencies; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with inmates, family members, co-workers, County employees and the general public
Must secure and maintain a favorable background investigation from the Bexar County Sheriff's Office
Must clear a pre-employment physical and pre-employment drug screen test
May be required to work more than 40 hours during the workweek; weekends; shift work and holidays
Work Environment and Physical Demands:
Working conditions are primarily in a jail environment
Physical requirements include lifting/carrying of 15-20 lbs. frequently; visual acuity, speech and hearing; hand and eye coordination and manual dexterity necessary to operate computer keyboard, 10 key calculator and basic office equipment. Subject to handling, walking, sitting, standing, bending, reaching, twisting and pushing to perform the essential functions
