The Investment Office team oversees the Society’s $1.3 billion endowment in support of the Society’s grant making efforts in science, conservation and technology. The newly established Investment Office will be a fast-paced environment dedicated to building a well-diversified portfolio of best-in-class investment managers to support the Society’s mission for many years to come.

The Investment Analyst will be a three year position and report to the Chief Investment Officer with dotted line reporting to the Directors on the team. This role will be an integral part of the Society’s small collaborative investment team. Like everyone on the endowment team, the Analyst will be a generalist and will be encouraged to source ideas and work collaboratively across all asset classes in the portfolio. The endowment portfolio target asset allocation is 70% global equities (public and private) and 30% diversifying assets including absolute return, real assets, and fixed income. Emphasis will be placed on providing analysts valuable exposure and training across all asset classes.

Your Impact
Responsibilities Include
  • Support the Chief Investment Officer and Directors in all aspects of managing the portfolio including operational and reporting responsibilities.
  • Perform qualitative research and quantitative analysis of prospective investment opportunities in a variety of asset classes.
  • Support the team’s primary research efforts to develop and source investment themes and ideas.
  • Assist with the ongoing monitoring of the Society’s existing investment managers including participating in manager calls, attending annual meetings, review of monthly & quarterly reports and updating findings to our internal research management database.
  • Develop and maintain a broad network of peers in the investment community in order to exchange ideas and stay abreast of emerging trends.
  • Perform ad hoc research on investment related topics or markets, as needed.
  • Support the Operations team to model and analyze portfolio performance and risk.
  • Assist in the preparation of materials for the Society’s Investment Committee, Board of Trustees, and other high-level audiences on a variety of topics.
  • Perform other projects/responsibilities as requested.
What You’ll Bring
Educational Background
Bachelor's degree in finance, math, accounting, economics, or science and completion of or progress towards obtaining a CFA and/or MBA preferred.
Minimum Years and Type of Experience
2+ years of successful work experience including finance (investment management, investment banking), corporate strategy, consulting and/or investigative research in other fields is required.
Necessary Knowledge and Skills
  • Demonstrated analytical ability, both qualitative and quantitative;
  • Strong financial modeling skills;
  • High attention to detail;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Salary Information

As a leading nonprofit organization, National Geographic Society offers competitive salary and total rewards to attract, develop, and retain an innovative and dynamic workforce.
The salary range for this position starts at $120,000.
Job Designation
Resident - Our Resident category recognizes that certain staff need to be physically present at Base Camp to do their work. Some Resident staff must always be onsite to do their jobs, while others may only need to be physically present some of the time. Some Resident staff may need to come into Base Camp every day, some may need to come in to meet looming deadlines and to get work done, and others may require a more unique schedule. The days Resident staff come into the office will be determined by their teams and workflow, and they should work with their supervisors to determine their specific schedule. And throughout the year, their schedule can be adjusted based on cyclical work cycles, deadlines, and/or ebbs and flows of work. As a guideline, Resident staff will be in the office between 3-5 days a week.
