Laboratory Assistant (Spectrum Center)

This is a part-time on-site role at the Spectrum Center Campus in San Diego, CA.
Position Summary:
With minimal supervision, the (part-time) Multi-use Laboratory Assistant prepares laboratories for classroom instruction by setting up the supplies and equipment for student experiments and demonstrations.
Essential Functions:
  • Oversees a complex instructional laboratory for general and forensic science.
  • Ensures the care and security of assigned equipment, materials, and supplies.
  • Prepares laboratories for experiments.
  • Performs set-up and tear-down of laboratories.
  • Maintains inventory supplies.
  • Manages hazardous waste disposal and adheres to safety regulations and procedures concerning Biohazardous and Hazardous chemical usage, storage, and disposal.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements:
Education & Experience:
  • Associate degree in related area of study preferred.
  • Or two years basic experience in laboratory techniques and concepts in the areas of life, physical, or forensics sciences.

Competencies/Technical/Functional Skills:
  • Must have familiarity with laboratory equipment and instruments, including microscopes, anatomical models, FT-IR, spectrophotometers, GS/MS, UPLC, PCR and gel electrophoresis.
  • Demonstrated competence in hazardous waste management.
  • Must be able to maintain, and have knowledge in, laboratory safety practices.
  • Ability to work independently and multi-task in a fast-paced environment.
  • Knowledge of operating systems utilized by team members of the University, including, but not limited to Internet Explorer and Microsoft Office products.
  • Competent in basic record keeping practices, and principles of training and supervision.
  • Basic knowledge of laboratory equipment repair with the ability to assemble, maintain, and repair laboratory equipment.
  • Exceptional communication skills (verbal and written) with the ability to interact with a variety of students, faculty, and staff.
  • Demonstrated competence in hazardous waste management.
  • Ability to ensure the care and security of assigned equipment, materials, and supplies.
Travel: No Travel Required
Candidate receiving offers will be offered a salary/pay rate commensurate with experience that vary based on a candidate’s qualifications, skills, and competencies. Absent exceptional circumstances, candidates will be offered a salary within this range for this position. The minimum salary will be offered based on the minimum exemption threshold based on state of residency. Compensation Range:
Hourly: $15.50 - $18.32
