An employee’s position within the salary range will be based on several factors including, but not limited to, specific competencies, relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, seniority, geographic location, performance, and business or organizational needs.Job DescriptionWe have an opening for a Web and Graphic Designer to create dynamic and engaging visuals for a diverse range of communications products and media to support the Laboratory’s Intelligence Programs, ZProgram and multiple organizations within the Global Security (GS) Principal Directorate. We are looking for a talented, creative, and strategic designer with relevant experience, skills, and talent in developing web content and performing layout, design, and graphics production. You will use your creative talents to create publications, infographics, posters, illustrations, logos and branding, and presentations for technical and non-technical audiences. The selected candidates will work closely with all levels of management, program leaders, scientists, and administrative staff to communicate programmatic strategies, highly complex scientific research, and technology information to a wide range of technical and non-technical audiences, primarily supporting products informing national policy makers on a wide range of topics concerning global security and the Intelligence Community. This position is in the Technical Information Department (TID) matrixed to the Global Security Principal Directorate.This position will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.This position offers a hybrid schedule, blending in-person and virtual presence. You will have the flexibility to work from home one or more days per week.You willPerform sophisticated document formatting and layout in Word or PowerPoint using a variety of templates for many different sponsors. This work is strongly coordinated with the team lead/editor and programmatic production manager.Create or revise graphics in documents using PowerPoint, Illustrator, and Photoshop. May be required at times to perform 3D modeling, design, and printing projects using computer-aided design (CAD) software, such as SolidWorks.Design new products in Word, PowerPoint, Illustrator, Photoshop, or InDesign for electronic or paper display. This may involve craft skills such as printing, cutting, and framing.Adhere to established standards for quality of work, guidelines, techniques, or procedures. Demonstrate methods and procedures, perform ongoing quality control checks, make routine commitments related to assignments, and interpret guidelines and procedures.Plan and coordinate production decisions on publication, multimedia, and presentation projects to oversee projects to completion, including coordinating work with other team members; estimating time and cost; choosing appropriate work methods; and setting work priorities and production schedules.Create, plan, and coordinate production decisions for various content to be used in publications, presentations, displays, and websites using a variety of computer software and conventional tools.Maintain and aid in designing classified websites (currently implemented in WordPress) for internal laboratory usage as well as external promotion of laboratory intelligence programs to the broad Intelligence Community.Collaborate with clients and coworkers to define, develop, and establish objectives to meet the design specification requirements for graphic projects and publications; for some projects, be responsible for customer contact and consultation.Communicate frequently with team lead about deviations in project costs and progress.Solve complex technical problems and assignments using established guidelines, techniques, and procedures to provide guidance to customers and coworkers regarding production process.Perform other duties as assigned.Additional job responsibilities at the G02.3 levelMeet with customers to conceptualize complex projects to understand timing, budget, production requirements, and intended outcomes for the most sensitive and critical projects.Prepare illustrations and animations, including two and three dimensional (2D and 3D).Work with management to establish the technical/creative direction for visual communication.QualificationsAbility to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q/SCI-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.Bachelor’s degree in graphic design, art, multimedia, communications, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and significant related experience in layout and graphic design or related field.Knowledge of Microsoft Office (especially Word, PowerPoint, WordPress), Adobe Creative Suite (Acrobat, Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign), and relevant knowledge in the use of design concepts and typography principles.Ability to conceptualize and effectively design, plan, direct, and coordinate websites.Experience establishing production team commitments of cost, schedule, and quality for communication projects.Experience conceptualizing and effectively designing, planning, and coordinating production of design projects using knowledge of computer programs and design methods.Experience communicating conceptual ideas and understanding of current industry standards and emerging technologies for publication production, presentation, and web. Experience with technical illustration.Excellent attention to detail and critical thinking skills and ability to manage timelines and shift priorities to support workload demands.Verbal communication skills necessary to interact tactfully and effectively with a diverse group of disciplines and customers. Experience working within a team and building relationships with customers.Ability to foster long-term internal partnerships and balance creative expertise with customer objectives and requirements.Additional qualifications at the G02.3 levelAdvanced knowledge of Microsoft Office (especially Word and PowerPoint), Adobe Creative Suite (Acrobat, Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign), and advanced relevant knowledge in the use of design concepts and typography principles.
