The Role


The Lead, Medical Content and Education Director, reporting into the Head, Scientific Communications and Engagement, is a newly created role that will focus on creation of content for all therapeutic areas within Biomarin’s R&D organization, from pipeline to marketed products. The incumbent will also be responsible for management of the education strategy in these spaces for all external education initiatives, ensuring that the single scientific voice is consistently carried through in all channels.


This position will be accountable for ensuring content for external engagement, from slide decks, infographics, and other digital delivery methods (including but not limited to web, social media, etc), are accurately with our single scientific voice, MMRC reviewed, and are cross functionally aligned to deliver on our GMAF objectives. The Lead will work in partnership with Global Medical Leads, Scientific Communications, L&D, Medical Engagement, key core team members, and the SMART team for execution support of educational objectives.


Key Responsibilities


  • Create timely scientific content from pivotal medical publications for HCPs
  • Work with L&D to ensure internal training parameters post congress are created
  • Work with MSL Engagement team to ensure scientific discussion topics are supported by key scientific content
  • Work with regional medical leads to ensure core educational gaps are met with enduring accredited independent medical education
  • Ensure content prior to a congress is aligned with SMART team members
  • Ensures medical booth content strategy is established and aligned with SMART team; key scientific messages must be consistent at tier 1, 2, and 3 congresses
  • Ensure content post congress is ready and available for medical field teams
  • Establish a global external education strategy for all therapeutic areas, with a curriculum vetted by external HCPs
  • Establish digital content strategy and ensure alignment with medical engagement
  • Create with scientific communications a medical approved email strategy; ensure the key scientific messages are aligned with our corporate partners
  • Work with scientific communications in order to create a medical education steering committee for key therapeutic areas and ensure that medical engagement is aligned to HCP engagement strategies at those steering committees.
  • Influences management/senior staff decisions regarding external education strategies study strategy and is viewed as a Subject Matter Expert on education decisions impacting a therapeutic area


Team Leadership

  • As a critical member of the SMART team, the incumbent will provide strategic direction on educational gaps, key regional education needs, and provide consistent updates on landscape changes in external education
  • As external content creation demands and educational needs expand, the incumbent will create a team expansion strategy to support the growing needs of Biomarin’s pipeline and marketed product portfolio.


Desired Experience


  • PharmD/PhD/MD/DO in life sciences or health related field with 7+ years experience with increasing responsibilities, complexity and accountabilities
  • Experience in content creation and education strategies for launch brands
  • Prior role in a global function, leading cross functional teams
  • Prior management experience with a track record for attracting and developing talent and optimizing team performance in direct and matrixed leadership roles a plus

In the U.S., the salary range for this position is $ 179,900 to $ 269,900 per year, which factors in various geographic regions. The base pay actually offered will take into account internal equity and also may vary depending on the candidate's geographic region, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience among other factors. A discretionary bonus and/or long-term incentive units may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to the full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the level and position offered.
