Position overview:
The Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Lightsource (SSRL, a Directorate of SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory), a national scientific user facility, has an immediate opening for a Life Science Research Professional (LSRP). In this position you will join a team that provides research, operational and safety support for external and in-house scientists and staff in activities that include a wide range of science, ensuring a safety-first approach. There is strong emphasis on high-level service approaches and communication, meeting customer needs, providing a varied levels of technical/scientific as well as safety support, bringing independence and organizational skills to a fast-paced environment.
Your specific responsibilities include:
- Support the SSRL user/staff Sample Preparation Laboratories (SPL), instrumentation and provide general laboratory services.
- Perform daily and bi-weekly safety and operational inspection of safety stations at experimental floor, beam lines, and user/staff laboratories to ensure full functionality and adherence to ES&H requirements. Maintain equipment and supplies inventory and ordering/stocking ensuring full operations readiness for these areas.
- Perform equipment / infrastructure calibration as required for safety and laboratory needs as applicable.
- Provide primary responsibility for administrative and safety processes involving users’ scientific sample deliveries to SSRL, and return of these samples back to user institutions, with accountability for ensuring adherence to DOE and national transportation requirements, as well as research sample/material integrity.
- Support the SSRL Safety Office in documentation development, tracking, and distribution.
- Assist safety officers and laboratory managers in tracking operating procedures and ensure compliance with revision deadlines.
- Maintain sample preparation laboratory training records in on-line data bases and ensure compliance with DOE and other regulatory entities.
- Maintain inventory of the required laboratory infrastructure, chemicals and supplies, track and address any deficiencies, perform needed procurement.
- Maintain critical research systems such as ultra-high performance water purifiers
- Provide rapid assistance in response to experimental requests for supplies or chemicals.
- Other general research and lab coordination responsibilities include:
- Perform basic functions and activities involved in defined research projects, and independently conduct and analyze experiments.
- Plan approach to experiments in support of research projects in lab and/or field based on knowledge of scientific theory.
- Independently conduct experiments; maintain detailed records of experiments and outcomes.
- Apply the theories and methods of a life science discipline to interpret and perform analyses of experiment results; offer suggestions regarding modifications to procedures and protocols in collaboration with senior researcher.
- Review literature on an ongoing basis to remain current with new procedures and apply learnings to related research.
- Contribute to publication of findings as needed. Participate in the preparation of written documents, including procedures, presentations, and proposals.
- Help with general lab maintenance as needed; maintain lab stock, manage chemical inventory and safety records, and provide general lab support as needed.
- Assist with orientation and training of new staff or students on lab procedures or techniques.

To be successful in this position you will bring:
- Bachelor's degree in related scientific field.

- General computer skills and ability to quickly learn and master computer programs, databases, and scientific applications.

- Preferred requirements include:
- Experience in handling hazardous materials and working in an occupational safety and health environment.

The expected pay range for this position is $54,000 to $71,000 per annum. SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory/Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
