About the role

Roku is expanding its People team with the addition of a Manager, Employee Relations & Workforce Compliance. This position can be based in Cambridge, UK or Austin, TX.

Reporting to the Director, Employee Relations & Workforce Compliance, this position is a pivotal member of the Employee Relations & Workforce Compliance team, providing support to our employees globally. This role will provide proactive guidance regarding workplace practices and policies and will provide key support in ensuring compliance with the ever-changing landscape of local, state/provincial, and country-specific laws and regulations.

Employee Relations & Workforce Compliance is a team of proactive, trusted partners who serve to assist our People Business Partners, business leaders, and employees by providing solutions to sensitive and complex workplace matters. The Manager, Employee Relations & Workforce Compliance will conduct internal workplace investigations, manage medical and religious accommodation requests, and partner with functional partners on company-wide initiatives, projects, and policy creation/review. The Manager will also assist in creating and delivering engaging training sessions on topics such as respect in the workplace, performance management, and managing within the law. This position will additionally have the opportunity to assist with current and future Workforce Compliance workstreams, including global contingent workforce processes, background check logistics, HR compliance-based audits, and shaping People policies and practices that are state, provincial, or country-specific, in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.


What you'll be doing

Employee Relations

Investigations:

  • Partner with various groups (People Business Partners, Employment Legal, and Global Safety and Security) on issues relating to serious and sensitive employee relations matters
  • Conduct confidential investigations of claims of harassment, discrimination, abusive conduct/bullying, retaliation, and other policy or local law violations. Provide guidance and recommendations on outcomes and communication
  • Assist in developing and implementing standardized processes for investigations, including tracking and documenting in a case management system

Policy:

  • Develop, revise, and advise on implementing global and country-specific company policies and processes consistent with changes in laws and regulations, best practices, and company culture
  • Advise on accommodations related to disabilities, medical conditions, pregnancy, and religion to drive consistency across the company
  • Provide ad hoc guidance to People Business Partners on coaching employees and performance management in complex, unique, or sensitive situations to drive consistency across the company

Education/Training:

  • Design, develop, and deliver ongoing employee relations- and policy-related training to the People Team community and to people managers

Production Employee Relations:

  • Assist in developing and implementing employee relations strategies for any Roku original film and television productions. Provide dedicated training and support to productions as needed

Workforce Compliance

Global HR Compliance:

  • Assist in developing and implementing processes and practices in response to changing laws and regulations, maintaining HR compliance for employees and offices worldwide
  • Partner with Workplace Solutions and Global Safety and Security to ensure office locations are physically compliant with training and other people-based requirements
  • Create and manage HR Compliance audits in the spirit of continual improvement.

Non-Employee and Pre-Employment Practices:

  • Partner with Manager, Workforce Compliance as needed on contingent worker processes, to assist with background checks, and assist with any other projects, as may be needed

We're excited if you have

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent in education and experience
  • At least 7 years of progressive responsibilities in Human Resources, with time and experience in dedicated Employee Relations positions. Experience dealing with labor relations and performance management is a plus
  • Strong knowledge of employment law, compliance, and conducting sensitive investigations. If based in Cambridge, UK, strong knowledge of EU laws and laws/employment practices of multiple European countries
  • Ability to think strategically and translate concepts into actionable items
  • Must possess consultative style and approach with proven ability to develop credible relationships while maintaining appropriate confidentiality
  • Comfortable working in ambiguous business situations and advising accordingly – developing creative solutions
  • Proven ability to influence decision-making; courage to make tough decisions and deliver difficult messages
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and project management skills
  • Excellent communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills
  • Exercise a high degree of professionalism and diplomacy in interactions with all levels of the organization
  • Strong experience and demonstrated skills in handling a variety of employee relations matters
  • Excellent follow-through skills and the ability to anticipate and address business needs proactively
  • Possess a strong work ethic; self-motivated with a desire to take initiative and look for ways to improve processes and create efficiencies

Preferred qualifications

  • Multi-state, international, or multi-country (EU) HR/Employee Relations experience
  • Ability to travel, including internationally, as needed
