Manager, Engineering - US Remote

Day in the Life

  • Collaborate with the product manager to gain a clear understanding of product requirements and objectives, summarize and prioritize complex projects, understand the significance of each component and allocate resources accordingly, handle trade-offs and negotiate deliverables to ensure project success within given constraints.

  • Gain comprehensive knowledge of the product being built, including how clients use it, to guide decision-making and align engineering efforts with business goals. Effectively communicate business requirements to the engineering team and lead them in designing efficient solutions, providing clarity in situations where there is ambiguity.

  • Drive the execution of projects, ensuring the on-time delivery of high-quality results using software development best practices. Offer technical guidance and facilitate discussions among team members. Participate in code reviews to maintain code quality standards and provide constructive feedback to the team.

  • Participate in the interviewing, hiring, and mentoring process for backend, database, and frontend engineers. Provide technical guidance and mentorship to team members, fostering their professional growth and development.

  • Work closely with cross-functional teams to ensure alignment and effective collaboration throughout the product development lifecycle.

  • Stay up-to-date with industry trends and technological advancements, proactively identifying opportunities for innovation and efficiency improvements. Foster a culture of continuous improvement, encouraging the team to challenge the status quo and explore new approaches to problem-solving.

  • Promote a collaborative and inclusive environment, where diverse perspectives are valued and contribute to better outcomes.

Who You Are

  • 5+ years of experience of hands-on software development experience, familiarity with relevant technologies like programming languages (i.e., C++, python, etc.), web development frameworks (i.e., Angular, React, etc.), database technologies (i.e., SQL, Redis, etc.), cloud platforms (i.e. Azure, GCP, etc), version control systems (i.e. Git, etc.), testing frameworks, CI/CD, Docker, Kubernetes, etc.

  • 2+ years experience as a people manager.
  • Proven problem-solving abilities and technical knowledge to address technical challenges, make sound decisions, and provide innovative solutions.

  • Excellent project management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks, allocate resources, and manage timelines effectively using Agile/Scrum best practices.

  • Excellent communication skills to effectively convey complex ideas at all levels of the organization, technical and non-technical stakeholders.

  • Strong collaboration skills to work effectively with cross-functional teams, such as product management and design, fostering a cohesive and productive working environment to drive successful development and delivery of projects.

  • Ability to align engineering efforts with business objectives, anticipate future needs, and contribute to the overall strategic direction of the organization.

  • Strong leadership and coaching abilities, with a track record of mentoring and developing high-performing teams.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead hiring and staffing efforts.

  • Willingness to be hands-on and work with a global team.

  • Flexibility to adapt to changing priorities and environments, and the ability to guide the team through ambiguity and uncertainty.

  • Proactive and result-oriented mindset, with a passion for driving innovation and delivering impactful solutions.

  • Remote team management experience.

What Sets You Apart

  • Experience with SaaS and/or EdTech

  • Experience with Microsoft technologies (C#, Azure, MsSql)

  • Experience working with a global team.

Educational/Certification Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, computer science, or equivalent years of experience.

Degreed is passionate about pay transparency and we are committed to fair and equitable compensation practices. The pay range for this role is $130k - $170k. Actual compensation packages are based on several factors that are unique to each candidate, including but not limited to: skill set, depth of experience, certifications, and specific work location. This may be different in other locations due to differences in the cost of labor.

Work Environment & Physical Demands

Degreed is a remote-first company, however our roles are open to in-office or hybrid if you live in a city with a physical office location. This role has the opportunity to operate 100% virtually from your home office. We primarily collaborate with our US and International colleagues through virtual meetings (Zoom), email, and Slack. In this role, you will be required to operate a laptop computer (PC or Mac available), computer software platforms, and other office productivity machinery as necessary. Due to the nature of this role, you must be able to remain stationary for extended periods, and must be able to observe and interpret written and/or verbal communication.
