This role is with the internal market monitoring (IMM) group in ISO New England. Market monitoring is responsible for protecting both consumers and market participants in the wholesale electricity markets by mitigating the impacts of uncompetitive bidding, identifying and reporting market design issues and market manipulation, and evaluating market performance. In fulfilling this role, we rely on a multidisciplinary team with expertise in economics, financial analysis, engineering, data science and law.
How You Will Make an Impact
As a member of the Surveillance and Analysis team, you will develop a detailed understanding of the workings of the wholesale electricity market. You will provide valuable insight to our team by applying economic principles in your daily monitoring of market outcomes and participant behavior. Working with large and complex data, you will perform in-depth empirical analyses on market performance and report on challenging electricity market issues for both internal and external stakeholders.

Your responsibilities will include:
Market Surveillance
- Continually track market outcomes, identify and explain trends and outliers
- Design, develop and run screening tools to identify market performance issues, non-compliance with market rules and uncompetitive behavior
- Identify and source relevant data through research and proactive engagement with colleagues
- Build data queries and analysis in a programming language
Economic Analysis
- Scope and perform empirical analysis of market performance, market efficiency and behavior
- Evaluate current and new market rules changes and recommend enhancements
Reporting
- Present complex and technical content to a diverse audience through written reports and presentations
- Write clear and insightful content, collaborate with colleagues to make connections between report sections
Investigations
- Identify market outcomes and market participant behavior that warrants further investigation and analysis
- Conduct investigations and make referrals to the federal energy regulator
What We Are Looking For
- Master’s Degree in Economics, Finance or Business
- Experience and/or interest in wholesale electricity markets and the electric industry
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills; Ability to communicate complex findings and ideas in plain language at an executive, board member, or regulator level
- Strong quantitative skills with emphasis on analysis using SAS or similar programming language
- Ability to conduct forensic-like investigations of market outcomes and participant behavior
- Demonstrated ability to work efficiently and collaboratively with others in a team environment
