Market Analyst

The electrical grid is the largest and most complicated machine ever built, on top of which exists a complex marketplace of buyers and sellers of electricity and related products. The Internal Market Monitor (IMM) uses large amounts of New England energy market and electrical grid data to identify anomalous behavior, investigate unexpected events, and guard against uncompetitive market outcomes – simply put, to solve real-world problems and make a difference.

How You Will Make an Impact
As a Market Analyst, you will apply your research, analytical, writing, inter-personal, and coding skills to implement market power mitigation rules, identify anomalies, understand and report on market events. You will get unique insight into how the grid is evolving to incorporate emerging, clean technologies (such as battery storage, wind and solar) and how ISO New England is rising to meet the challenges of this transition. You will learn how power plants operate from engineering and business strategy perspectives, and to use the lens of a “bad actor” to identify exploitable gaps in market rules. As a jack-of-all-trades, you will interact with market participants, conduct financial analysis, develop tools and data visualizations to screen for irregular and non-compliant behavior, and communicate your findings in writing and presentations.

Don’t worry, you will not be alone! In fulfilling this role, you will be supported by a hard-working and collaborative team with expertise in economics, financial analysis, engineering, data science and law.
