About us:

Start Small Think Big is a non-profit on a mission to empower and catalyze under-resourced entrepreneurs. Founded 10 years ago in New York City, we have successfully expanded our work to San Francisco, Oakland and San Jose. We are now in the midst of another period of rapid growth and expansion, as we work to replicate our model nationally and grow existing programs to serve larger numbers of entrepreneurs. We are also currently undergoing an exciting rebrand, with the goal of expanding our impact and increasing support for small businesses, amplifying the voices of the under-resourced, and celebrating what it means to be all for small.

 

In order to connect under-resourced small business owners with the strongest pro bono legal, financial and marketing support to transform their growing businesses, build wealth for themselves and their families, and create jobs for others in their communities, Start Small Think Big has: 

  • Partnered with the majority of the top 100 U.S. law firms, including Simpson Thacher, Weil Gotshal, Cleary Gottlieb, Debevoise & Plimpton.
  • Partnered with some of the biggest and most well-respected financial and marketing corporations, including American Express, Morgan Stanley, Google, Goldman Sachs, Group Nine Media
  • Secured significant support for our work from some of the largest and most forward-thinking foundations in the space, including Kauffman, JPMorgan Chase, Citi.


About the role:

We are seeking a mission-focused, digitally-savvy, strategic Marketing & Sales Program Director to help evolve our programming to support small businesses in the digital age. This position offers a unique opportunity for a marketing expert to shape our programming and enable small businesses to grow their brands online. You will be a key member of the leadership team and responsible for overseeing the strategy and execution of the Marketing & Sales Program, ensuring that our clients receive high quality marketing support and that we deepen our corporate partnerships to activate programming and sales opportunities. 

This is a dynamic role -- you might be designing a new programming slate one day, leading a marketing workshop or collaborating with a corporate partner the next. The ideal candidate is an experienced digital marketing or programming professional, and/or has experience as an entrepreneur or implementing marketing strategies at a startup company. Ideally, you also have experience teaching marketing to others, either in the workplace, accelerator programs, events, or through blogs/digital content. You are someone who balances strategy and execution, and brings a creative approach to the work -- you have the confidence and clarity to set a vision and the operational know-how to bring that vision to life. Additionally, you are an organized self-starter with strong communication skills and the ability to motivate those around you. 

You should be comfortable with change, adept at prioritizing for execution, and are an equal parts leader and team player, with a roll-up-their-sleeves attitude. Most importantly, you are passionate about supporting small businesses, social justice, and all things marketing.

This person will report into our Director of Marketing & Business Development and will work closely with our Legal and Finance Program teams.


What you'll do:

Program Strategy & Operations (50%)

Strategy & Implementation: 

  • Set strategic vision and objectives for the Marketing & Sales Program that are responsive to the organizational strategy, client needs, industry trends, and current climate
  • Streamline and build upon existing programming to support client’s digital transformation and eCommerce needs
  • Establish and stay accountable to program KPIs and collaborate with the Impact team to assess program success and client outcomes
  • Create a tactical plan to execute against program strategy, ensuring programming and service offering is highly responsive, the client experience is best in class, and operational effectiveness is in place

Operational Excellence: 

  • Refine systems and processes to support programming/services and volunteer engagements for continued growth and scale

Reporting & Impact:

  • Leverage insights and data to inform program strategy, priorities, and recommended changes

Small Business Assistance:

  • Provide marketing assistance to our small business clients as needed 


Partner Management & Integration (20%)

  • Ensure corporate and sales partners remain highly engaged and have a positive experience, and that the Marketing & Sales Program successfully bridges the gap between client/program needs and volunteer capacity:
  • Nurture and grow post-pitch relationships with corporate, community, and sales partners 
  • Retain sales and corporate partners and secure repeat volunteer engagements
  • Liaise with Community Partner leads on co-branded programming opportunities


People Management (20%)

  • Coach direct reports, developing individual strengths and addressing opportunities for growth
  • Establish clear individual goals that ladder up to overall team objectives, and evaluate individual performance


Special Projects (10%)

  • Collaborate with executive team, cross-functional teams, and external partners on unique projects that may fall outside of regular duties, but support broader organizational goals, expansion plans, etc. as needed
  • Represent the Marketing & Sales Program in brainstorm and planning discussions, sharing ideas, concerns, and advocating from your vantage point


About you:

  • 6+ years of relevant experience in digital marketing, program management, and/or entrepreneurship.
  • Nonprofit or social impact experience is a plus; Experience working in cross cultural environments is desired. 
  • Technical experience as a marketer and/or experience developing marketing curriculum, with a strong understanding of entrepreneurship and the small business ecosystem highly preferred.
  • Spanish language fluency is a plus. 
  • Entrepreneurial acumen and drive, ability to see and respond to opportunities or challenges.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to effectively influence and communicate with diverse stakeholders and colleagues, while always maintaining a strong level of professionalism and tact.
  • Takes ownership and initiative; also thrives in a collaborative environment and is able to work with different personalities and work styles.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills; ability to prioritize and work smartly, identifying high-value projects that will have the greatest business impact.
  • Strong partner and peer management skills; able to set and honor expectations and ensure ongoing information exchange.
  • High level of computer proficiency including familiarity with Google Apps and MS Office, Experience with Trello and Zoom a plus. 
  • A dedicated interest in helping underserved communities, commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion, and an enthusiasm for helping small businesses succeed.


English language fluency required

Spanish language fluency highly desired
