General Summary of PositionThe Nursing Professional Development Specialist is accountable for leading professional development and clinical education of the multidisciplinary patient care associates and leaders within MedSTAR Transport. In conjunction with the Director of Nursing Education and Interprofessional Development, AVP Clinical Operations and Medical Director, leads education and professional development activities and programs, which foster the professional practice and ongoing development of clinical personnel. Guides and recommends development of best practices in patient care during medical transport; assists department leaders in the development of department-based initiatives in the areas of clinical care, staff development, education, and compliance with external regulatory and accreditation standards. The Professional Development Specialist oversees the assessment, planning, development, implementation and evaluation of learning and ongoing development programs to enhance associates' performance and competencies in the ground and air medical transport environment. Works shifts in the ground ambulances and helicopter as a registered nurse crew member or observer to maintain familiarity with the clinical care that is provided in the transport environment.Primary Duties and ResponsibilitiesContributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies, procedures, quality standards, and safety standards. Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations.Assumes responsibility for the planning, development, execution, and ongoing evaluation of MedSTAR Transport's multidisciplinary (registered nurses, paramedics, emergency medical technicians) training, ongoing development and education programs. Assesses learning needs through formal and informal approaches to determine knowledge and educational gaps and priorities to meet the learning needs of associates. Applies teaching techniques that promote critical thinking and evidence-based practice incorporating principles of adult learning theory.In collaboration with the Director of Nursing Education and Interprofessional Development, AVP Clinical Operations, Medical Director of MedSTAR Transport and System VP of Nursing professional development, develops professional development goals, objectives, and desired outcomes. Ensures adherence to MedStar Health and MedSTAR Transport policies, procedures, standards/guidelines, and those of regulatory and accreditation agencies; assists in the development and execution of corrective action plans when deficiencies occur.Collaborates with operational leaders and other department heads, including nursing practice and informatics, in addressing priorities and implementation of effective educational/training programs - in the classroom, online, simulation, and in the clinical field.Plans orientation programs for new personnel to facilitate a new associate's transition to MedSTAR Transport's clinical environment and meets competency assessment requirements in conformance with departmental objectives, regulatory requirements, value-based purchasing requirements, patient experience requirements, and accreditation standards.Provides expertise for competency development, assessment, and management across MedSTAR Transport's clinical disciplines - Basic Life Support, Advanced Life Support, Critical Care. Sets the standard, plans, and regularly conducts competency validation programs for all associates in partnership with discipline experts/leaders. Maintains appropriate documentation of these programs and activities as required by regulatory and accreditation standards. Supports clinical peer review in an evidence- based practice environment.Provides documentation of participation and level of success during competency and educational programs to meet requirements of all regulatory bodies. Analyzes and prepares reporting of education competencies and quality metrics to all necessary agencies to maintain accreditation standards.In collaboration with the AVP Clinical Operations and Medical Director, plans and implements continuing/ongoing education activities to expand current knowledge and to inform, teach, and facilitate adoption of new procedures, technologies, equipment, and patient care trends with continuing education credits where appropriate. Facilitates the offering of clinical nursing and specialty certification review programs.Develops evaluation plans and applies evidence-based evaluation models to determine the effectiveness of educational activities and learning programs. Involves learners and team members in the evaluation process. Disseminates the evaluation results of the learning activities and revises learning programs based on objective evaluation data. Monitors associate credentials and recommends counseling and/or corrective action for personnel. Develops educational remediation plans.Creates a professional practice atmosphere and an environment of coaching, development, and cooperation by serving on committees and as a liaison between external agencies/associations and professional and educational institutions and faculty. Establishes collaborative relationships between practice and academia with targeted regional and national nursing and allied health programs.Supports MedStar Health System Nursing goal of achieving eighty percent (80%) baccalaureate-prepared nursing workforce and one hundred percent (100%) professional transport certification (CFRN, CTRN, FP-C).. Serves as an advisor to fellow nurse leaders on academic progression of nurses. Collaborates with other nurse leaders on securing grant funds that support the ongoing professional development and academic progression of the MedStar Health nurses, paramedics, and EMTs.Maintains knowledge of current trends and developments in the fields of nursing, paramedicine, emergency medical services, aviation, air and surface transport, clinical instruction, nursing education, and multidisciplinary professional development through a variety of professional activities including, but not limited to, reading the appropriate literature and attending related seminars and conferences. Demonstrates accountability for own professional development and advancement.Participates in multidisciplinary quality and service improvement teams as appropriate. Participates in meetings, serves on committees, and represents the department and facility in community outreach efforts as appropriate.Ensures SPIRIT values are consistently exhibited in interactions with patients/families, referring facility personnel, and team members within the Transport program.Works proactively to develop a strong safety culture and ensure safety standards and practices are strictly enforced throughout the program.Regularly works shifts in the ground ambulances and helicopter as a registered nurse crew member or observer to maintain familiarity with the clinical care that is provided in the transport environment and apply this knowledge to the ongoing development programs to support high performance teams.Minimum QualificationsEducation• Bachelor's degree in Nursing from a nationally accredited program required and• Master's degree in Nursing Education preferredExperience• 3-4 years Experience working in critical care/emergency medicine required and• 1-2 years Experience in a medical transport environment, air and ground ambulance. preferred and• Experience in nursing education or professional development preferred and• Leadership or supervisory experience preferred and• Prior experience working with a Commission on Accreditation of Medical Transport Systems (CAMTS) accredited program, the District of Columbia Department of Health (DC DOH), MAryland Institute for Emergency Medical Systems (MIEMSS), and Virginia Office of Emergency MEdical Services (VAOEMS) preferredLicenses and Certifications• RN - Registered Nurse - State Licensure and/or Compact State Licensure Current Registered Nursing licensure in the District of Columbia and Maryland (or ability to obtain licensure). Upon Hire required and• CPR - Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation (includes BLS and NRP) for healthcare providers from either the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross within 90 Days required and• ACLS - Advanced Cardiac Life Support Certification Upon Hire required and• PALS - Pediatric Advanced Life Support Certification Upon Hire required and• STABLE - RN - Sugar, Temperature, Airway, Blood Pressure, Lab Work, and Emotional Support within 180 Days required and• CAMTS approved trauma certification within 180 Days required and• Certified Flight Registered Nurse or Certified Transport Registered Nurse within 2 years required and• Nsg Prof Develop Bd Cert - RN-BCNPD within 2 years required and• FEMA ICS 100 Course 100.C within 180 Days required and• FEMA ICS 200 Course 200.C within 180 Days required and• NIH Stroke Scale - NIHSS within 180 Days required and• NREMT - National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians-Basic (EMT-B) preferred and• Certification in Nursing Professional Development or Nursing Education from a nationally recognized nursing organization preferred and• Prior experience working with a Commission for the Accreditation of Medical Transport Systems (CAMTS) accredited program preferred and• Course instructor certifications desirable. preferred• Additional unit/specialty certifications may vary by department or business unit.Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities• Excellent communication /interpersonal skills (including radio, telephone, and written).• Demonstrated ability to lead and motivate others.• Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and able to quickly learn other software systems required for the position.• Good time management and project management skills.• Good research and writing skills.• Effective problem-solving skills and ability to exercise independent judgment and seek guidance when appropriate.• Emotional stability to function effectively in unpredictable situations.• Meets the physical requirements to work in the ground ambulance and helicopter either as an assigned crew member or an observer.• Demonstrates high level of clinical competence related to acute care and emergency care settings as well as varying patient populations and age groups.• Basic medical math skills.This position has a hiring range of $87,318 - $149,094
