WIO/KCWI in Des Moines, Iowa has received the WeatheRate seal of approval for proving the most accurate weather forecasts in the Des Moines metro area for 17 years in a row. Weather is who we are and what we do at Local 5. Our team of meteorologists is looking for a dynamic and engaging Weekend Meteorologist and Multi-Skilled Journalist who has a passion for winning severe weather. You’ll experience it all from tornado outbreaks, Derechos, and blizzards to brilliant Spring blooms, hot summer days, and bright-color Fall leaves.

In addition to the forecasting credentials, the ideal candidate is also a storyteller and ready to shoot, write and edit impactful news stories that reflect and improve our community.

Responsibilities:

What You’ll Do:

  • Provide accurate and compelling weather forecasts on multiple platforms
  • Produce clean, creative, and informative graphics to tell the weather story
  • Prepare and deliver severe weather updates, interrupting regular programming as necessary
  • Develop story ideas, write, shoot, and edit news stories for all of WOI platforms
  • Develop contacts and sources within the community to help with original storytelling and breaking news reporting
  • Front stories live from the field or studio with a strong on-camera delivery and the ability to ad-lib

Job Requirements:

Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor of Science in Meteorology preferred.
  • Strong communication skills (written/oral) for on-air delivery.
  • Minimum of 1 year of on-air experience is preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide accurate weather forecasts using the latest weather technology in a multi-platform environment.
  • Exceptional online and social media skills.
  • Must actively participate in social media, including Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

Work Environment: Office

Physical Demands: Sedentary work

Travel: Rarely: less than 10%

Work Environment Set: Office: normally performed in a typical interior/office environment
