New England Donor Services (NEDS) coordinates organ and tissue donation in Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, the eastern counties of Vermont and Bermuda. Responsible for one of the largest of the 56 Organ Procurement Organizations (OPOs) that make up the nation’s donation system, NEDS works with over 200 hospitals and serves nearly 15 million people in our region, screening nearly 55,000 potential donor referrals annually. With approximately $110M in operating revenues, NEDS employs 348 clinical and non-clinical staff members throughout New England and across the country.

Job Description

As a hands on position, the Manager of Systems Engineering is responsible for providing leadership and direction for day-to-day activities of the NEDS System Engineering team, and, providing leadership and technical expertise to NEDS Information Security Program. The Manager also oversees the implementation of policies and procedures and is responsible for defined results. While applying Information Security concepts, this is a hands-on technical position responsible for the installation, configuration and maintenance of the NEDS computing domain.  Plan, develop, and implement changes and systems that support the business, clinical, administrative to support various initiatives and projects.  Lastly, the Systems Engineering Manager must work with the other members of the organization at the highest levels.

Supervision:

  • Provides direct supervision and support to Systems Engineering Team.
  • Conducts monthly rounding meetings, ongoing performance feedback, goal setting and performance metrics, professional development, performance improvement plans and disciplinary processes as needed.
  • Partners with Human Resources (HR) to address all employee relations issues in accordance with NEDS policy, procedure and practice.

Essential Job functions:

  •  Overall owner of NEDS systems architecture
  • Provide technical leadership/management for the NEDS systems engineers.
  • Design, configure, develop, and optimize complex systems, including hardware, software, and network components, to meet business requirements.
  • Foster a collaborative and innovative team environment to drive excellence in systems engineering practice.
  • Must be able to lead, influence, and motivate others with demonstrated ability to manage a technical staff
  • Lead during a crisis and can demonstrate an ability to resolve complex issues
  • Serve as an escalation resource for persistent issues which have not been resolved within defined SLA’s.
  • Lead technical projects, including planning, execution, and delivery, ensuring alignment with project goals, timelines, and budgets.
  • Manage existing virtual infrastructure. Activities include configuration and management of network switches, iSCSI-based storage, and host hardware. Troubleshoot issues as needed
  • Recommend new capital infrastructure projects to drive IT strategies and improve organizational workflow.
  • Assess new technologies and acquire new hardware as needed to maintain a defined hardware lifecycle.
  • Possess the ability to express complex technical concepts effectively, both verbally and in writing to people with varying degrees of technical expertise
  • Excellent problem solving and decision making skills.
  • Able to understand technical manuals, equipment and software specifications, contract terms and conditions, statements of work, and general methods of network and telecommunication management
  • Collaborate with NEDS departments to develop new solutions for process/development related problems, stay current with industry best practices and trends within our systems and storage infrastructure and hybrid environment.
  • Maintain a productive relationship with business sponsors and end users.
  • Coordinates support of the telecom system.
  • Responsible for the IT Disaster Recovery Plan and maintenance of the DRaaS solution.
  • Recommends new capital infrastructure projects to drive IT strategies and improve organizational workflow.
  • Assists the CIO in developing policies and deploying technologies for the organization’s information security program.
  • Configure and maintain information security based hardware and software, including (but limited to) firewalls, SIEM appliances, next-gen antimalware, email security solutions.
  • Conduct network, system, and application vulnerability scanning, configuration assessment, and remediation.

Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Processes & Systems: Strong understanding of systems engineering principles, methodologies, and best practices.
  • Data Analysis: ability to collect, analyze, and present data to identify patterns, trends, and relationships among variables.
  • Project Management Skills: demonstrated ability to lead, organize, and manage multiple projects, adapt to changing priorities, and utilize time-management skills to meet deadlines.
  • Computer & Application Literacy: Strong understanding of M365, Microsoft SharePoint, Microsoft SQL, Microsoft Server Operating Systems, Active Directory, DHCP, DNS, WSUS, Windows Deployment Services (WDS), and Windows Failover Clustering.  Proficient with VMWare virtualization software including vSwitch and iSCSI setup and configuration.
  • Coaching and Mentoring:  Exercises patience to create a safe place for learning, demonstrates persistence to unlock the potential of any individual, utilizes empathy to reflect upon what the individual is feeling or experiencing, ensures that communication is direct and transparent, focuses on creating greater awareness about goals, seeks meaning and listens to spoken and unspoken words, provides feedback on crucial points and attitudes to help the individual evaluate their performance.
  • Performance Management & Team Building:  Proven ability to work in and lead teams that produce results.  Ensures that organizational goals are met in an effective and efficient manner by enhancing the skills and professional development of employees and building teams.
  • Innovative Leadership: Knowledge of current security threats and how they would affect the organization while creating a secure access plan.  Ability to assess an issue or opportunity and develop and implement an innovative solution
  • Interpersonal and Communication Skills:  strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.  Ability to critically think, problem solve, and work productively both independently and as a team participant. Skilled in active listening and proven ability to handle sensitive and confidential information.
  • Emotional Intelligence:  Demonstrates the ability to understand, use and manage emotions in positive ways to relieve stress, communicate effectively, empathize with others, overcome challenges and diffuse conflict.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s degree required. 
  • Requires 10-15 years’ experience with workstations, fileservers, routers, switches, disaster recovery, virtual architecture.  
  • Proven experience in engineering management roles
