Overview:
NRDC is a non-profit environmental advocacy organization. We use law, science, and the support of 3.1 million members and online activists to protect the planet's wildlife and wild places and to ensure the rights of all people to clean air, clean water, and healthy communities. NRDC was founded in 1970 and our people helped write some of America's bedrock environmental laws, including the Clean Water Act and many of the implementing regulations. Today, our team of more than 700 lawyers, scientists, economists, policy advocates, communications experts, and others work across the United States and the globe from our offices in Bozeman, Montana; Chicago; New York; San Francisco; Santa Monica; Washington, D.C.; and Beijing.

NRDC is seeking a Northeastern Campaigns Manager to work with the Center for Policy Advocacy team remotely from Harrisburg, PA.

Position Summary
NRDC is hiring a politically experienced campaign manager to join the Regional and State Campaigns team in the Center for Policy Advocacy department in its New York or Washington, DC office. Reporting to the Northeastern Campaigns Director, the Northeastern Campaigns Manager will develop and implement advocacy tactics to influence federal and state policymakers primarily in Pennsylvania and other eastern states.
Responsibilities:
  • Develop and implement regional and state campaign plans and budgets for advocacy and accountability initiatives in close collaboration with Program, Advocacy, and Communications partners and with federal campaign teams.
  • Typically engage in 4-5 concurrent priority campaigns, including for the NRDC Action Fund.
  • Organize partnerships with state and local organizations to achieve campaign objectives.
  • Organize campaign briefings and reports for internal and external interested parties.
  • Manage campaign consultants and vendors as assigned.
  • This position does not have direct reports but there is a great deal of horizontal management required in the role.
  • Expect occasional late night and weekend work with short notice.
  • Expect travel between 3-5 days per month.
Qualifications:
Required
  • 5+ years of experience in politics and advocacy or three election cycles.
  • Preference given to those that have managed or served as a director on one or more major issue advocacy, federal or statewide political campaign.
  • The ideal candidate is experienced in and adept as both an organizer and as a campaign tactician. They should be experienced in and well-prepared to frame issues, use polling and other research to guide advocacy communications, and organize outreach to stakeholders and coalition partners through a variety of paid and earned campaign tactics.
  • Proven experience in managing internal processes, project teams and budgets.
  • Exceptional ability to analyze information, formulate plans, and convey them in writing and through oral presentations.
  • Track record of cultivating high-level relationships with political, non-profit advocacy, and philanthropic leaders, with a well-established professional network in politics, government, and non-profit advocacy.
  • Ability to represent NRDC with maturity, judgment, and professionalism.
  • A bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.
  • Commitment to NRDC’s values and mission.
Preferred Additional Qualifications:
  • Recent experience working in and having strong governmental/political/professional networks in the Northeast and particularly Pennsylvania would be especially attractive.
  • Professional exposure to energy and environmental issues is not required. We are looking for innovative, cutting-edge campaign and public affairs professionals, first and foremost.
  • Some professional exposure to working in Congress, a state legislature or in a gubernatorial administration is desirable but not required. We are not necessarily looking for a long-time legislative or government staffer with minimal campaign experience. The ideal candidate is instead a seasoned campaigner who might have a year or more of legislative experience.

We offer competitive salaries, excellent benefits, and a supportive working environment. Salary is based on a nonprofit scale and is commensurate with skills and experience. For this position, the salary is $113,000 to $121,000. Internal equity considerations will be reviewed before making a final offer.
