Opportunities for remotework are rare.Job DescriptionNAU Police Officers patrol campus to detect and deter criminal orsuspicious activity. Officers investigate criminal activity,vehicle accidents, personal injuries and university administrativeviolations and write detailed reports describing suchincidents/investigations. NAUPD provides professional, courteous,and effective service to all campus members, including students,faculty, staff, and guests. NAUPD investigates complaints and worksto resolve conflicts both on campus and concerning the campuscommunity.Essential Physical Requirements• Able to drag objects up to 165 pounds.• Able to pass a physical abilities test - https://in.nau.edu/police-department/employment-opportunities/Enforcement of Local, State, and Federal Laws - 30%• Patrols assigned areas on foot, bicycle, or by motorizedvehicle to control traffic, prevent or deter crime and educate,cite and/or arrest violators; issues warnings or citations todrivers when violations of motor vehicle laws are observed;enforces Federal and State laws as well as university rules.• Constantly analyzes the job for improvements to, ormodifications of, university law enforcement services and makesrecommendations to department management.Response and Investigation of Crimes, Accidents and Incidents -30%• Responds to emergency alarms and calls for service; makesdecisions based on analysis of situation and facts.• Responds to public service calls such as delivering emergencymessages, motorist assists, animal complaints, civil complaints,domestic disturbances.• Investigates reports of missing persons.• Identifies unsafe conditions or areas ripe for criminalactivity; reports conditions and takes corrective actions.• Investigates all types of crimes and accidents; performsfollow-up duties on crimes/accidents as directed by supervisor;interviews suspects and witnesses; collects evidence and facts;files appropriate reports as directed by federal, state, or locallegal requirements.Administrative Duties and Training - 20%• Prepares detailed written reports of crimes, accidents, andincidents.• Compiles daily reports on law enforcement activities fordepartment management.• Serves warrants, subpoenas, or other court processes asnecessary.• Appears in court to provide testimony on investigations.• Participates in ongoing and recurring trainings as required bythe department and its accrediting agencies, the university, andthe Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training board.• Trains sworn and non-sworn personnel on departmental policies,procedures, and activities.Department Representation - 15%• Works with the university residents/community and other outsidepublic agencies to solve residential/university concerns.• Makes oral presentations to students, faculty, staff, and othercitizen groups on crime prevention/public safety issues.• Maintains knowledge of, and answers questions about, campus lawenforcement.Other - 5%• Other duties as assigned.Minimum Qualifications• High School diploma or GED Experience Credentials• Current AZPOST certification in good standing, or ability toobtain after successful completion of police academy or throughwaiver process.• 21 years of age upon completion of academy, US citizen, andmeets AZPOST standards.• Possess current AZ Driver's License.Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities• Knowledge of law enforcement practices and procedures.• Skill in analytical, objective observation of situations andquick decision making.• Maintain proficiency in law enforcement equipment.• Maintain ability to perform to physical requirements of thejob.• Skill in managing situations courteously, tactfully,impartially, and firmly.• Skill in the accurate and complete recording ofinformation.• Ability to communicate effectively both in verbal and writtenformats.• Skill in keyboarding and the operation of a personalcomputer.Driving RequirementDriving a vehicle on behalf of the university is anticipated to bea regular part of this position. Arizona Administrative Code FleetSafety Policy requires all employees who drive on universitybusiness become authorized by submitting Driver's licenseinformation for driving record monitoring, and completion oftraining appropriate to the level of driving performed. The lawapplies to all faculty, staff, and students who drive personal oruniversity-owned motorized vehicles for any business purpose. Moreinformation on the NAU Authorized Driver Policy can be found onthe NAU website.Background InformationThis position has been identified as a safety/security sensitiveposition. Therefore, per AZ Revised Statute, Northern ArizonaUniversity requires satisfactory results for the following: acriminal background investigation, employment historyinvestigation, degree verification (in some cases) andfingerprinting. If you are applying for a job that requires a CDL,you will be required to register with the Federal Motor CarrierSafety Administration Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse and adhereto the clearinghouse requirements. Additionally, as an employer inthe state of Arizona, NAU is required to participate in the federalE-Verify program that assists employers with verifying newemployees' right to work in the United States. Finally, each yearNorthern Arizona University releases an Annual Security Report. The report is a resultof a federal law known as the Clery Act. The report includes Cleryreportable crime statistics for the three most recent completedcalendar years and discloses procedures, practices and programs NAUuses to keep students and employees safe including how to reportcrimes or other emergencies occurring on campus. In addition, theFire Safety Report is combined with the AnnualSecurity Report for the NAU Flagstaff Mountain Campus as thiscampus has on-campus student housing. This report discloses firesafety policies and procedures related to on-campus student housingand statistics for fires that occurred in those facilities. Pine Knoll Drive in Flagstaff.Salary• Starting Salary is $55,000 while in the Police Academy and willincrease to $57,750 upon graduation from the Police Academy.• Lateral Salary is $57,750- $67,000 Annual salary commensuratewith candidate's qualifications and related experience.FLSA StatusThis position is non-exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act(FLSA). The incumbent is eligible for overtime pay or compensatorytime according to University policy. Further, the employee mustsubmit timesheets that accurately reflect all hours worked.BenefitsThis is a Classified Staff (CLS) position. NAU offers an excellentbenefit package including generous health, dental and visioninsurance; participation in the Arizona State Retirement System;paid vacation and 10 holidays per year; and tuition reduction foremployees and qualified dependents.
