Engagement occurs through partnerships we create. Engagement disseminates the work of the university to the regions we serve - regions that are becoming more global and connected. OERD's 16 departments provide engaged research, teaching and service to our partners. Through regional development we provide programs, classes and services in DeKalb, Rockford and the greater Chicagoland area benefitting students, educators and industry. OERD conducts our own programs with partners across the region. About 70% of our budget comes from external sources, reflecting our outward focus. Our work directly and indirectly contributes to NIU's mission and vision. Through programs, projects and events, we represent NIU to the Northern Illinois community every day. We bring people together to create meaningful relationships and positive change. We also provide centralized support for outreach and engagement activities delivered by NIU's seven colleges. We collaborate with faculty and staff on existing projects while fostering external partnerships that link academic research and support services to the community and the region. Position Summary The Outreach Marketing Associate ( OMA ) is responsible for the Division of Outreach, Engagement and Regional Development ( OERD ) program and event promotion by designing and leading strategic marketing, communication, and operational plans. OMA works collaboratively with fellow OERD Marketing & Messaging team members and division stakeholders to set clear goals for project success. OMA unites OERD's program staff through regular meetings, frequent communication and ongoing support. OMA follows project management processes to plan, execute, monitor and close marketing projects on time and on budget, using the workflow of information intake, strategic plan, budget estimate, and operational plan. The Outreach Marketing Associate applies best practices for website, social media, print and email marketing, while identifying new marketing and communication strategies and channels. OMA uses leadership skills to solve problems, unite teams, delegate tasks and communicate effectively, recognizing how projects fit into the big picture, while understanding detailed operations. OMA manages complex email campaigns and mailing lists, using advanced features in the division's email/ CRM system to schedule messages that align with the goals and timelines of marketing plans. The Outreach Marketing Associate balances the needs of the division with the resources of the OERD Marketing & Messaging team. OMA meets strict deadlines while addressing the needs of multiple clients and programs. Essential Duties and Responsibilities The Outreach Marketing Associate ( OMA ) is responsible for the Division of Outreach, Engagement and Regional Development ( OERD ) program and event promotion by designing and leading strategic marketing, communication, and operational plans. OMA works collaboratively with fellow OERD Marketing & Messaging team members and division stakeholders to set clear goals for project success. Minimum Required Qualifications (Civil Service) • Bachelor's degree in marketing, business administration, communications, public relations, or a closely related field. • Note: Master's Degree in an area consistent with the duties of the position may be substituted for one (1) year (12 months) of work experience. • One (1) year (12 months) of professional work experience in marketing, public relations, communications, brand management, or a related professional area. • At least (1) year (12 months) professional experience managing advanced features (automation maps, conditional content, personalization, tags, fields, segments, form building, scheduling) of an email marketing program such as Mailchimp, Constant Contact or ActiveCampaign. • At least (1) year (12 months) professional experience developing detailed marketing and operations plans. Marketing plans include strategy, communication, budgeting, timelines, and retrospectives. Proven ability to execute these plans to positively affect outcomes. • At least (1) year (12 months) professional experience working as part of a collaborative marketing team. • Proven experience creating and implementing a multichannel marketing strategy for an event or program. Must have a portfolio of marketing campaigns and data-driven results. • Experience using at least 2 style guides for design, branding and/or writing. • Advanced knowledge and practice of project management methodologies and tools. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs) (Civil Service) • Knowledge of principles and methods for showing, promoting, and selling services or events. This includes marketing strategy and tactics, audience segmentation, sales techniques, and custom messaging. • Ability to learn and use advanced features in marketing platforms including email marketing, project management, social media scheduling, and analytics tools. • Ability to work as part of a team, providing leadership, communicating effectively, and supporting colleagues to accomplish project, department, and division goals. • Ability to build positive collaborative working relationships with clients and coworkers, while balancing the needs of the client with the resources of the Marketing & Messaging department and marketing best practices. • Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar. Skill in verbal and written communication. • Skill in identifying complex problems and reviewing related information to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions. • Skill in time management, organizing work assignments, and responding quickly and effectively to challenges. Position KSAs • Proven ability to develop strategies and practices to proactively address ongoing projects. • Proven ability to synthesize and communicate the "big picture" division outlook and how department marketing plays into that. • Coursework in project management and marketing. • Understanding of change management practices. • Experience gathering and analyzing data.
