Job Description

The House Supervisor, Managerreflects the mission, vision, and values of NM, adheres to the organization’s Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines and all other regulatory and accreditation standards.

The House Supervisor, Manager is a registered nurse who manages overall hospital operations on the day, evening, night, weekend, and/or holiday shifts using leadership skills and clinical and administrative operations expertise.

Responsibilities:

  • Create and model an environment that fosters the development of collegial relationships among nursing and other department personnel. Serve as a connector between nursing personnel and other health care or support disciplines throughout the hospital(s). Demonstrate teamwork by helping co-workers within and across departments using effective communication that respects diverse opinions and styles and acknowledges the assistance and contributions of others.
  • Interacts with on-call senior management during weekends and holiday hours.
  • Hold staff accountable for quality care delivery, service standards and professional behaviors. Maintain clinical knowledge and expertise to adequately supervise and assess staff competence
  • Support ongoing learning and skill development for self and staff; provides coaching and mentoring; assigns stretch goals, cross-training and other opportunities for career development.
  • Identify individual team members’ skills and interests; provides timely, positive, constructive feedback; address performance gaps as they occur with clear action plans and timelines for improvement.
  • Assists units with the scheduling and staffing of personnel including the authorization and approval of LOWS, schedule changes and use of overtime. Coaches charge nurses and assists nurse managers on how to utilize staffing resources to maintain HPPD metrics.
  • Other duties as assigned

  • Advanced proficiency in the EMR and other applications used by the staff.

  • Calmly and easily responds to and manages others through changes in work environment, delays or unexpected events.
  • Provides guidance and supervision to team members in problem solving complex situations.
  • Serves as a role model and coach to others; builds partnerships and teams.

Interactions/interpersonal skills

  • NMHC Performance Leadership Competencies (from performance management system)
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills and the ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with patients, physicians, management, staff and other customers, internal and external to NM.
  • Exudes confidence, professionalism, interest and optimism when leading others in the workplace; guided by the servant leadership philosophy.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality for patients and their families, as outlined in the Northwestern Memorial HealthCare Patient Confidentiality policy.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Licensed RN in the State of Illinois
  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing
  • Completion of management of aggressive behavior training within 2 years of employment
  • Minimum 3 years of clinical nursing supervisory experience
  • Basic life support (BLS)

Preferred:

  • Manager: MSN or healthcare related degree 
  • 5 years of nursing management experience
  • PALS certification
  • Specialty certification
  • ACLS certification, preferred at NMH
