NWREC Vegetable Crops Assistant

This recruitment will be used to fill up to three part-time (a maximum of 20 hours per week during school year/40 hours during school holidays and summer break) NWREC Vegetable Crops Assistant positions for the OSU-North Willamette Research Center at Oregon State University (OSU).

Position are located at the North Willamette Research and Extension Center (NWREC) in Aurora, Oregon. The Vegetable Crops Research program is recruiting students who will assist the program with a variety of tasks.
Position Duties
100% of duties will consist of:
  • Planting, hoeing or weed pulling
  • Checking insect traps
  • Conducting plant
  • Insect sampling, and collecting and recording data
  • Some travel to offsite field locations may be required
Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study
  • Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment
  • Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard
    • High School student: Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home-schooling program
    • Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term
    • Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term*
    • Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per term
    • Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term*


  • International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above and still be considered “full-time” by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). A reduced course load is approved by the Office of International Services (OIS), and must be provided to the Student Employment Center.
Additional Required Qualifications
  • Perform assigned tasks without close supervision
  • Capable of working outside and standing/walking for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to lift 25 lbs
  • Students who are under 18 years old are required to have passed a tractor safety certification class prior to operating a tractor
  • Attention to detail
  • Maintain a positive and collegial attitude
  • Student employees (but not all employees) may be selected to drive to offsite locations, as needed, at the request of the farm manager. Drivers must be over 18 years old and have successfully completed OSU’s required motor vehicle history check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver’s license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions as per OSU Standard 576-056-0000et seq.12
Preferred (Special) Qualifications
  • Experience with insect identification
  • Experience with tractors (for students over 18)
