On-Call Urban Planner

Freese and Nichols, Inc. (FNI) is currently searching for an urban planner to join our award-winning Urban Planning and Design Group in a part-time on-call capacity, ideal for individuals seeking professional work but not necessarily on a full-time basis. The position will primarily support staff augmentation to urban planning and development services functions of cities and counties, such as development application review, long-range planning efforts, and other planning issues. The candidate must be a well-organized self-starter, with excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Responsibilities/Accountabilities:
  • Work in a collaborative environment as part of a multi-discipline team.
  • Act as a planner independently or part of a project team responsible for a variety of tasks including research, demographics, land use, master planning, zoning, writing, and meeting preparation.
  • Demonstrate ability to produce well-written reports.
  • Support the planning team in public meeting facilitation, including Board & Commission meetings and City Council meetings.
  • Manage personal timeliness and technical correctness of a project to ensure high-quality work that fits within a client’s budget and expectations.
  • Be willing to travel as needed to meet project commitments.
Qualifications
Required Skills and Qualifications:
  • Minimum Experience - 5+ years of urban planning-related work experience.
  • Minimum Education - Bachelor’s degree in Urban Planning, Architecture, Landscape Architecture, or related planning field required.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Preferred Skills and Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree in Urban Planning.
  • Prior work with or in a municipal planning department or consulting firm desirable. American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) certification.
  • Skills in Adobe Creative Suite, GIS/mapping and graphic skills desired.
