Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), Petersburg Residency, is seeking individuals to serve the citizens of the Commonwealth and travelling public daily through our mission to plan, deliver, operate and maintain a transportation system that is safe, moves people and goods, enhances the economy, and improves quality of life. We are seeking individuals interested in joining our team who is able to operate power tools and heavy equipment (chain saws, trimming and chipping machines, dump truck, loader, backhoe, motor grader, tractor w/attachments) and perform manual labor. Position is located Church Road Area Headquarters.

As a maintenance operator, you will:

  • respond to emergency roadway and severe weather events to prepare and operate equipment for snow and ice removal and other types of hazardous road conditions
  • attend work zone training, prepare work zones and perform traffic control
  • demonstrate proper work site protection techniques: identify workplace safety hazards, make suggestions for improvement, wear proper personal protection equipment, maintain current knowledge of safety rules, regulations, laws and use equipment properly and safely
  • participate as a working team member performing manual labor including, clearing drainage, cutting brush, pot-hole patching, and fulfilling tasks required to complete road maintenance projects
  • complete pre-trip inspections, perform preventive maintenance and operate power tools and light to heavy equipment.

VDOT is an emergency response agency and this position is the core of this requirement, therefore you will work outside of normal work hours during emergency operations.

"Starting June 1, 2022, in addition to a comprehensive compensation and benefits package, a $3,000 sign-on bonus is available for qualified candidates. A 12 month tenure agreement is required.”

Minimum Qualifications

You are minimally qualified if you have:

  • knowledge of safety policies, procedures, and programs
  • knowledge of highway maintenance equipment, materials, and methods
  • demonstrated experience in equipment operation comparable to that used in highway maintenance/construction activities
  • ability to perform heavy manual labor, including frequently lifting up to 50 lbs
  • skill in the operation and maintenance of hand and power tools
  • ability to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter
  • ability to work in inclement weather and to respond to accidents, and emergency/disaster response, etc. during/after normal work hours including nights, weekends, and holidays

Additional Considerations

Preferred qualifications include:

  • valid CDL or CDL Learner’s Permit
  • experience with heavy manual labor and heavy equipment operation
  • experience performing preventive maintenance and minor equipment repairs
  • experience in emergency operations to include snow removal, storms and accident response and clean-up
  • High school diploma or GED preferred; equivalent experience or training may substitute for education.

Verification of work history, DMV records check, and a fingerprint-based criminal history check will be conducted prior to first day of employment. Pre-employment physical will be required, to include a drug screen for CLP or CDL holders. Safety shoes are required in performance of job duties, which are a reimbursable item. Additional positions may be filled from this recruitment.

NOTE: Employees hired without a valid CDL in hand are required to obtain their CDL within 11 months of their hire date. You cannot operate commercial motor vehicles prior to receiving the necessary licensure and medical certification. New Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations require entry-level drivers (drivers who are seeking to take the skills test in order to obtain a CDL for the first time, upgrade their CDL to a Class A from a Class B, or take the knowledge test to obtain a hazardous materials endorsement for the first time) to complete FMCSA- approved Entry-Level Driving (ELD) Training before the Department of Motor Vehicles can grant the requested CDL or endorsement. The course is comprised of 160 hours, on average, of training. VDOT is willing to assist with your enrollment in and payment for the course upon your acceptance of an ELD Training Tuition tenure and repayment agreement.

The successful candidate will be required to successfully complete the Intermediate Work Zone course, and obtain a DEQ Land Disturber Certification within 6 months of employment.

VDOT is an emergency response agency. This position is essential requiring you to work in emergencies, to include weekends, holidays, and after normal business hours; assignments may vary based on business needs to include working in severe weather.
