Job Summary

LIGO Laboratory (the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory) seeks a highly motivated and skilled Outreach Intern to join its team.

This position is located in Richland, WA.

LIGO Laboratory is a National Science Foundation major facility dedicated to observing the newly discovered gravitational-wave universe. Jointly operated by the California Institute of Technology and Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the LIGO Laboratory operates world-leading observatories near Richland, WA, and Baton Rouge, LA as well as R&D centers on the Caltech and MIT campuses. The LIGO Laboratory's mission spans a broad and vibrant array of activities related to gravitational-wave physics and astronomy, including detector operations, R&D toward detector improvements, gravitational-wave astrophysics, observatory operations, and education and public outreach.

Life at LIGO Hanford Observatory as a Caltech Employee
LIGO's observatory in the shrub-steppe of Eastern Washington is an approximately 20-minute commute from Richland, WA., where it is located on the edge of the Department of Energy Hanford Site. Caltech employs a staff of 49 at the Hanford observatory. Caltech has an extraordinary science impact across many fields. Essential Job Duties

LIGO seeks a highly motivated and skilled Outreach Intern to join its team. Interns will spend time both with outreach and scientific staff facilitating the growth of their communication, as well as technical, knowledge and skills. Outreach interns assist EPO staff in leading outreach activities such as field trips, STEM nights, and classroom activities. In addition to assisting with current outreach activities interns use their creativity and knowledge to design new lessons, activities, and programs. When not assisting with outreach activities interns have the opportunity to work on project with one of several groups on site such as the electrical engineering lab or the computer science group. Interns are expected to work approximately 10 hours a week during school and 40 hours per week during the summer. Schedules are flexible and will take into account other commitments interns may have. Occasional nights and weekends may be required.

Basic Qualifications
  • Candidate should be currently pursuing an undergraduate degree for one of the following fields of study: education, engineering, computer science, or physics.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous experience working with K-12 students and/or the public.
