Packer Leader

Duties

  • Ability to Lead or Supervise other Packers
  • Review automated inventory report data to access information necessary to evaluate kit shortages and to recommend priority order in which workers build NFES kits from selected stock components.
  • Pack and label material following agency, Federal and international packing and shipping requirements for hazardous and non-hazardous materials and items.
  • Determine sequences of loading and unloading to develop space utilization plans and implement the movement of incoming fire supplies and outgoing refurbished product for placement to docking and storage locations.
  • Enter condition of returned items into inventory management system for records reporting.
  • Determine packing configuration to assemble items according to kit component packing lists and inspect for accuracy.
  • Perform packer work, such as packaging, loading/balancing standard sized and shaped cargo, selecting packing materials taking into account such factors as size, type, weight, fragility, method of transportation, storage facility/final destination.
  • Make independent judgements and decisions within the framework of oral and written instructions and accepted methods, techniques and procedures.
  • Follow general oral and/or written instructions for assigned work, relying on a higher-level packer for assistance in handling situations when encountering a dangerous, unusual/rapidly changing situation, in order to complete assignment successfully.
  • Participate in the development of prototype kits, which includes developing the packing configuration and kit component requirements for field use.
  • Use and/or maintain various types of equipment for the purpose of packaging such as heat sealers, hand powered and mechanical shrink wrap, banding and stapling machines.
  • Perform visual and operating checks to determine when tools and equipment should be tested, repaired, and/or calibrated.
  • Monitor working condition of tools to determine equipment damage.
  • Build kits from individual components according to National Fire Equipment System (NFES) standards.
  • Pack tools, materials and equipment using a wide variety of standard packing methods and techniques that include items of a large, heavy or fragile nature.
  • Provide and/or recommend possible substitutes and interchangeable items, or refurbishment procedures, such as for changes to kit configuration, component packing lists, and refurbishment guidelines.
  • Determine condition of returned equipment and supplies to correctly code and route material through the refurbishment process or to determine the removal from service.
  • Assemble specialized kits transported by air, delivered via parachute to remote work sites, packing kits using protective material to withstand impact and avoid breakage/spillage (i.e., initial attack kits containing equipment such as chainsaws)
  • Correct safety problems that were noticed or pointed out to me, completing assignments safely and on time.

You will be further evaluated against criteria for placement in the Quality category.
