Position Description

Supports professional staff in providing care and service to all patients/families. Under direct supervision of licensed nursing personnel, performs a variety of intermediate level nursing care activities that contribute to the comfort and safety of patients. Supports the plan of care for assigned patients.

Position Requirements

The Patient Care Intern assists the registered nurse and licensed practical nurse in providing designated non-professional basic care services. All patient care is performed under the direction and supervision of the registered nurse or licensed practical nurse. Meets the health care needs of patients within the framework of the nursing process. Performs only those activities for which responsibility has been designated according to unit-specific guidelines. Assist in the admission, transfer and discharge of patients to the unit according to unit-specific guidelines. Assist patients with routine activities of daily living, eating, bathing, dressing, and room care. Assist in pre- and post-procedural care for diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. Provide input into the plan of care by reporting pertinent information involving the patient and/or family to the assigned a registered nurse or licensed practical nurse. Participate in implementation of the plan of care as evidenced by completion of assigned duties. Documents patient care activities, treatments, and measurements according to departmental policies. Communicates patient needs/changes promptly to the appropriate person(s). Escort patients. Transports medications, laboratory specimen, supplies, or equipment to or from unit.

Preferred Requirements

Previous experience in a medical/surgical unit.
