Patient Transporter

GENERAL SUMMARY:

Under general supervision and according to established policies and procedures, transports patients via wheelchair, stretcher, bed or alternative means. This includes disconnecting and re-connecting patient’s IV pumps from the IV pole and oxygen. Delivers patient equipment to nursing floors as needed.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:


  • Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of patients served. This includes knowledge of the physical and psychological needs of patients served and the ability to respond appropriately to those needs.


  • Patient transport duties:

    • Transports patients via wheelchair, stretcher or bed. Delivers patient equipment to nursing floors as needed.


    • Transports or escorts patients being admitted to EH to their assigned rooms. Transports patient discharges as necessary.

    • Transports deceased patients to the hospital morgue.


    • Transfers patients from beds onto wheel chairs and stretchers using various transfer equipment including, but not limited to, Slide Boards, Hover mats and lift machines.


    • Disconnects and re-connects IV pumps from IV poles and oxygen from patients prior to and after patient transport. Notifies appropriate nursing personnel of patient status accordingly.



  • Transports medical reports/records, blood, specimens, radiographs, medications, equipment and other items as requested to and from various hospital locations as assigned.


  • Regularly inspects transportation equipment for damage and/or defects. Cleans equipment by wiping surfaces with disinfectants following established procedures. Retrieves wheelchairs, carts, and other equipment from inpatient units and returns them to central location. Ensures all equipment is in proper location for easy access.


  • Completes daily equipment round of each nursing unit to obtain items to be returned to Central Sterile Processing Department as assigned. Soiled patient care equipment is returned to the decontamination area of CSP.


  • Responds to required codes and provides CPR as necessary. Serves as a “runner" for needed supplies and/or equipment during a code situation.



    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

    Preferred Education and/or Experience:

    • High-school diploma
    • Minimum six months customer service or patient transporter experience
    • Required License and/or Certification: CPR BLS
