Population Health Data Analyst

Data Analyst in Population Health

The University of Maryland Institute for Health Computing (UM-IHC) is recruiting a staff data analyst with expertise in secondary analysis of real-world data. The Data Analyst will work as a programmer and statistician overseeing data management and analyses of health care claims datasets with a strong focus on health needs relevant to the population of Maryland. The incumbent will report to the Director of Population Health at the UM-IHC and work in close collaboration with other faculty, epidemiologists, and data scientists to analyze national claims databases (such as Medicare and/or Medicaid) and/or population-based data (such as NHANES, MEPS, Census-derived data, and others) to identify and evaluate opportunities to improve health care access, delivery, and outcomes. The incumbent will also have the opportunity to be engaged in research projects involving methods development, novel algorithm development, and in-depth data analysis that facilitates clinical implementation.

The data analyst will possess expertise in statistical analyses and programming languages such as SAS, Stata, R, or similar, as well as advanced knowledge of common issues encountered in analyses of observational data. They will manage data and conduct analyses independently and in collaboration with biostatisticians and data scientists on the team. The data analyst will also assist with interpretation and dissemination of results, including preparing and documenting research findings for academic publications and grant proposals.

About the University of Maryland Institute for Health Computing

The UM-IHC is a collaborative initiative of the University of Maryland Baltimore, the University of Maryland College Park, and the University of Maryland Medical System, founded with generous funding from Montgomery County and the State of Maryland’s MPower initiative. Based in North Bethesda, MD, the IHC optimizes computational and analytical methods to build a learning health system for improving the health and quality of life of the citizens of Maryland. Key foci of the Institute include population health, clinical trial innovation, data analytics, therapeutic target discovery, and education and training.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage and analyze large and complex datasets to identify trends, patterns, and insights that inform evidence-based decision making.
  • Collaborate with clinicians, researchers, and data scientists to identify data-driven opportunities for improving healthcare outcomes.
  • Ensure that all research activities are conducted in compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and ethical standards.
  • Provide technical expertise and support to colleagues across the organization, including training and mentoring in programming and data analysis techniques.
  • Stay up to date with emerging technologies and programming languages.
  • Design and implement data collection tools.
  • Develop code to review transcription errors and create clean databases.
  • Access databases remotely and trouble shoot errors in data collection/transcription.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications


Education:
Master's degree Master's degree statistics, data anlaytics, or mathematics.

Experience: Two (2) years of statistical analysis experience analyzing studies using a range of statistical techniques in a biological science environment.

Other: Master's degree epidemiology or public health and three (3) years of statistical analysis experience analyzing studies using a range of statistical techniques in a biological science environment.

Preferred experience: Experience working with health care claims and/or population-based data.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Advanced knowledge of programming languages such as SAS, Stata, R, or similar.
    Knowledge of clinical data and healthcare code sets and ontologies (ICD9/ICD10, CPT, NDC/RXNorm, LOINC, etc.)
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to analyze large and complex datasets.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively with clinicians, researchers, and data scientists.
  • Proven ability to work independently and in a team environment, with a strong sense of ownership and accountability.

Hiring Range: $109,000 - $115,000 (Commensurate with education and experience)
