Principal Application Engineer Sr

Responsible for leading Application Engineering activities in Enerflex’s Process and Systems Division. Performs technical scope development and performance optimization of both internal and external technologies for new opportunity solution development. Acts as primary contact for customer’s technical team during solution development and technical liaison for internal sales and commercial teams.

Position Summary

Responsible for leading Application Engineering activities in Enerflex’s Process and Systems Division. Performs technical scope development and performance optimization of both internal and external technologies for new opportunity solution development. Acts as primary contact for customer’s technical team during solution development and technical liaison for internal sales and commercial teams.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Able to meet deadlines, concurrently balancing multiple project priorities, develop the work and interface with others in a team environment.
  • Assists less experienced application engineers on technical issues related to preparation of proposals and evaluation of equipment performance to assure the best solution is applied.
  • Manage client interactions throughout bid, including written correspondence, teleconferences, and face-to-face meetings on technical scope, bid clarifications, etc. as required.
  • Thorough understanding of design, specifying and selection of gas processing equipment (i.e. heat exchangers, separators, fractionation towers, pumps, turbo expanders, compressors, etc.). Performs engineering calculations to size equipment accordingly.
  • Engage external suppliers as needed to develop technical scope, cost, and performance.
  • Engage Engineering, Manufacturing, HSSE, and other functions as needed to develop technical scope, cost, and performance.
  • Assists with development of internal tools that efficiently converge to cost effective solutions.
  • Complies with Enerflex P&T Engineering standards and guidelines.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of industry codes and standards, ASME, API, NEC, OSHA terms and guidelines.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of commonly used concepts, practices, and procedures within the field of natural gas treating, compression, and hydrocarbon processing, as required by the Company product family for which the individual is responsible.
  • Develops P&ID’s from origination to completion, understands control concepts, and can specify effective control loops on P&IDs.
  • Organize process engineering and technical information into a written proposal package, including but not limited to: Process Descriptions, Simulation PFDs and HMBs, equipment lists, utility summaries, P&IDs and Data Sheets.
  • Performs complex analyses of customer requirements to identify potential solution offerings by the company, both for the products produced by company or bought out for specific applications, providing the appropriate process or equipment selection(s).
  • Possesses a strong knowledge of fluid dynamics and hydraulics. Develops line sizing for P&IDs to meet process and project hydraulic requirements. Maintains continuity in system pressure and temperatures.
  • Provides engineering calculations for complete heat and material balances, line sizing for all systems, equipment sizing including hydraulic level specification, retention and settling times.
  • Provides engineering to evaluate customer comments on approval drawings for technical and commercial content.
  • Some travel may be required to support customer inquiries, plant commissioning, startups, PHAs, or HAZOPs.

Required Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering

Preferred Education

  • Master's degree in Chemical Engineering
  • Professional Engineering license or equivalent preferred, but not required

Required Experience & Skills

  • 15+ years’ experience as a process / chemical engineer with specific experience in any or all of the following scope: gas processing, oil processing, produced water treatment and power generation. Significant experience in O&G or process industries required.
  • Ability to work intensely and accurately under tight time deadlines
  • Ability to review new RFQ’s to determine scope of work and come up with cost effective solutions to meet the customers’ needs.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business information, RFQ documents, technical journals, engineering procedures, and/or industry & government code, specifications, standards, and regulations
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form
  • Extensive background and knowledge of process safety concepts.
  • Hysys and Protreat process simulation experience.
  • Experience developing front end engineering deliverables
  • Experience with plant control systems
