The Cepheid Human Factors Engineering & Industrial Design team has a mission to deliver a Better Way of improving patient outcomes by designing diagnostic solutions using the science and practice of human factors engineering to ensure best-in-class user experience for all humans everywhere. The Principal Industrial Designer is part of the Human Factors Engineering & Industrial Design group and is based in Sunnyvale, CA. In this role, you will have the opportunity to:

• Inspire: Promote the business and emotional value of design throughout the product development process and contribute to the development of the design team. Synthesize and collect user needs and wants as an influence to ideation process and divergent thinking.
• Explore: Lead co-create workshops to facilitate ideation and concept generation using design process thinking and idea capturing techniques, valuing diverse perspectives from cross-functional teams. Invent ways and means to unlock design pathways and challenge constraints that require tradeoffs, advocating for a design vision that promotes the ideal user experience and elevates Cepheid’s brand and business.
• Create: Define a design language and signature elements to create iconic product(s) and achieve a holistic user experience across physical and digital touchpoints while delivering on target user’s desires. Conceptualize and visualize product experiences using sketches, CAD and renderings, and prototyping (physical and/or digital) to represent product vision and interactions.
• Iterate: Collaborate with Human Factors Engineers (HFE) on user research and usability testing. Evolve designs through testing and balancing divergence with convergence based on objective analysis of responses to design concepts.
• Implement: Collaborate with Engineering and Product Management to ensure the design intent is properly implemented, manufactured, and assembled. Translate design process thinking to product development.

• The essential requirements of the job include:

• Bachelor’s degree with 12+ years of related work experience OR Master’s degree in field with 8+ years of related work experience OR Doctoral degree in field with 5+ years of related work experience in Industrial Design, Product Design or equivalent.
• Extensive experience in industrial design, interface design, research, and new product development and the ability to be flexible and organized, and able to meet deadlines on multiple projects, and to adapt methods and approaches when needed.
• Persuasive presentation and storytelling skills that can influence and inspire the project team. Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills that facilitate design collaboration with team members and leaders.
• Experience with a human-centered design approach, including translating user needs into design principles.
• Proficiency with contemporary design and prototyping tools: Solidworks, Keyshot or similar 3D modelling and rendering software, Adobe Creative Cloud suite of products, Figma, Axure or similar interface design applications and knowledge of design for excellence methodology.

• It would be a plus if you also possess previous experience in:

• Experience working with design controls on medical products.
• Experience in designing products with physical and digital interfaces.
• Practical experience with task analysis and workflow optimization.

The salary range for this role is $190K - 230K. This is the range that we in good faith believe is the range of possible compensation for this role at the time of this posting. We may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range. This range may be modified in the future.

This job is also eligible for bonus/incentive pay.
