The Team

Upstart has experienced remarkable growth in recent years, successfully processing billions of dollars in loans every quarter. The Servicing Engineering team plays a crucial role in managing these loans smoothly, maximizing collections, and building strong customer relationships. Our primary focus is to build a loan servicing platform and automate business processes while enhancing efficiency, and providing an intuitive user experience for both our borrowers and internal teams through the use of data analytics, machine learning, and automation.

As a principal engineer, you will have a significant impact on guiding and setting the technical direction of projects and teams. Your expertise and experience will provide critical guidance and ensure high-quality engineering solutions.

Position Location - This role is available in the following locations: Remote, San Mateo, Columbus, Austin

Time Zone Requirements -This team operates across all U.S. time zones

Travel Requirements - This team has regular on-site collaboration sessions. These occur 3 days per quarter at an Upstart office. If you need to travel to make these meetups, Upstart will cover all travel related expenses.

How you’ll make an impact:

Technical leadership and vision:

As a principal engineer, you will have a significant impact on guiding and setting the technical direction of projects and teams. Your expertise and experience will provide critical guidance and ensure high-quality engineering solutions.
Mentorship and talent development: One of the key roles of a principal engineer is to mentor and develop engineers (of all levels). By providing guidance, sharing knowledge, and fostering a learning culture, you will have a lasting impact on the growth and career progression of your team members.

Architecture and design excellence:

Your deep technical knowledge and understanding will enable you to contribute to the architectural decisions and design of complex systems. Your input will ensure the scalability, reliability, and efficiency of the solutions developed by the teams.

Problem-finding and innovation:

Principal engineers are first and foremost problem finders. Once a problem has been identified they find innovative approaches to solving those problems. Your ability to think critically, identify risks, and propose creative solutions will have a direct impact on the success of projects and the overall technical prowess of the organization.

Thought leadership and best practices:

With your strong engineering background, you will advocate for quality assurance, best practices, and coding standards. By promoting robust engineering processes and ensuring adherence to industry standards, you will contribute to the overall reliability, maintainability, and scalability of the team’s software systems. By actively participating and sharing insights, you can contribute to the engineering culture of the company, establishing your personal thought leadership and positively impacting the team’s reputation.

What we’re looking for:

Minimum requirements:
- 10+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to Ruby, Java, JavaScript, or Python
- Strong technical and software engineering fundamentals including a demonstrated ability to build and own large-scale, highly available consumer products
- Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, or related technical discipline
- Expert understanding and hands-on experience building and operating large-scale fault-tolerant distributed systems, workflows, databases and mobile/web applications
- Deep understanding of code release, deployment orchestration / rollout mechanisms, logging, instrumentation, monitoring, and alerting in a microservices environment
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Preferred qualifications:
- Experience in a Fintech Company building scalable cloud based distributed systems
- Possesses sound business and technical judgment. Thinks in terms of ROI, tradeoffs, and risks. Analytical in areas outside of technology
- Has defined and executed on a longer term (multi-quarter +) technology visions or strategies for multi-team organizations
- Knowledge of emerging technologies and industry trends
- Ability to lead multiple streams of work across different team
- Ability to identify gaps in organizational knowledge, tools, and practices and produce and execute on plans to address those gaps

At Upstart, your base pay is one part of your total compensation package. The anticipated base salary for this position is expected to be within the below range. Your actual base pay will depend on your geographic location–with our “digital first” philosophy, Upstart uses compensation regions that vary depending on location. Individual pay is also determined by job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Your recruiter can share more about the specific salary range for your preferred location during the hiring process.

In addition, Upstart provides employees with target bonuses, equity compensation, and generous benefits packages (including medical, dental, vision, and 401k).

$166,700—$245,000 USD
