JOB DESCRIPTION
ROLE SUMMARY
Alston & Bird seeks a highly engaged and driven Pro Bono Manager. This manager reports to the Pro Bono Partner, and should be highly connected within the legal community as well as pro bono initiatives, efforts and trends. The manager is responsible for firmwide pro bono efforts in each of our Alston & Bird office locations.
RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:
  • Support Pro Bono Partner and office chairs in strategic thinking and implementation of pro bono goals and policies
  • Develop design and promote pro bono projects and opportunities for attorneys and help make connections for our attorneys to new matters consistent with the firm’s goals
  • Develop and maintain relationships with legal service organizations; Identify new pro bono opportunities locally and nationally
  • Distribute opportunities and help place cases with appropriate staffing and supervision
  • Connect attorneys with resources for pro bono matters as appropriate, including training and precedential materials, experts, vendors, and translators
  • Develop training programs with pro bono leadership
  • Oversee pro bono website, maintain updated lists of pro bono opportunities and board placements, and update pro bono calendar
  • Provide support for the firm-wide pro bono committee, working groups and practice group ambassadors
  • Support orientation of summer associates and lateral attorneys
  • Analyze pro bono data and provide reports on pro bono metrics to practice group and office leadership and various departments
  • Respond to surveys and to data requests from legal service organizations ;
  • Attend PBI and APBCO conferences, Atlanta Pro Bono Roundatble, and local pro bono and legal services community events
  • Act as manager to the department coordinator; oversee performance and delegate tasks, projects and events as needed
  • Assist with internal and external clinics, pro bono events and programming;
  • Coordinate recognition events and content (Pro Bono Week, Pro Bono Newsletters, and ABBY Awards)
  • Collaborate on internal and external communications and presentations
  • Responsible for department budget; oversight on subcommittee spending, and sponsorships
  • Oversee sponsorship of and attendance at events held by our pro bono partner organizations
  • Respond to community requests / “cold” calls and emails for pro bono assistance
  • Understand and ensure compliance with internal and external pro bono policies and practices and risk management procedures
  • Conduct other tasks as needed
SKILLS NEEDED TO BE SUCESSFUL
  • Familiarity and relationships with legal services organizations preferred
  • Strong organizational skills, careful attention to detail, and demonstrated project management skills
  • Excellent written and oral communications
  • Strong leadership skills and ability to take initiative
  • Ability to identify issues, innovate, be creative and implement solutions
  • Ability to balance competing demands
  • Strong desire to be a team player and work collaboratively
  • Excellent interpersonal skills. Ability to collaborate with others to achieve common goals
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
  • Demonstrated commitment to social and economic justice preferred
  • Minimum of five years law firm or legal service organization experience involving pro bono program management
  • Bachelor’s degree required
