Process Engineer

Best known for Little Debbie® snack cakes, America’s leading snack cake brand, Sunbelt Bakery® granola products, and Drake’s Cakes®, McKee Foods Corporation is seeking a Process Engineer to join our Plant Process Engineering Team. The process engineer leads and executes process improvement initiatives in order to increase the overall level of process and equipment performance in the manufacturing plant. This posting is for two positions. One position is primarily at plant 2 and the other position is primarily at plant 5 . Your preference will be considered.
Pay Grade
Salaried Grades 5, 8, 10, 11, 13, or 14
$60,000 to $135,000, depending on experience and qualifications
The base salary range represents the starting and expected pay for this position. Actual salaries may vary and in some cases may be higher with extensive experience and strong performance.
Job Summary
Responsibilities include developing a systemic, organizational understanding of key technical processes, assuring these processes can be operated with a high level of repeatability and consistency, overseeing the institutionalization of this understanding through training and documentation, and leading projects and initiatives to stabilize and improve these processes. Responsibilities also include tracking and analyzing the performance of these processes to identify and prioritize improvement opportunities of the greatest value and impact to overall plant operations. Improvement initiatives will generally be collaborative in nature with the process engineer leading a team of cross functional resources from various groups such as production, maintenance, manufacturing services, corporate engineering, R&D, etc. The process engineer may have responsibility for management and development of one or more direct reports including maintenance and/or process technicians.
Key Responsibilities
  • Develop a systemic, organizational understanding of key technical processes, assuring they can be operated with a high level of repeatability and consistency.
  • Develop and lead initiatives to stabilize and improve these processes to increase operational efficiency and productivity, reduce waste and improve quality.
  • Work with management to identify process improvement opportunities in the areas of safety, quality/food safety, cost, performance, and preventive and predictive maintenance
  • Evaluate and analyze current process metrics and performance to identify and prioritize opportunities for improvements
  • Evaluate process data needs and develop/lead the implementation of instrumentation or other process information devices/systems in support of stability, repeatability and reliability objectives
  • Assist in the development and delivery of training for employees to ensure that they develop the skills to become subject matter experts in new or modified systems and processes; enabling them to implement and sustain the improvements
  • Develop or oversee the development of standard procedures and practices
  • Lead and support root cause problem solving efforts when plant and equipment issues arise. Determine corrective and preventative actions and ensure that these are appropriately documented and sustained
  • Follow MOS principles in the development and deployment of new processes and process stabilization and improvement efforts to achieve sustainable results
  • Assist Managers in prioritization and oversight of capital project work
  • Provide process engineering support for capital projects in the areas of equipment selection, design reviews, commissioning and performance validation
  • Assist in reviewing proposed new products for manufacturability
  • Lead and collaborate with various teams to reduce process and business variations
  • Prepare and deliver project presentations for management when needed
  • Review and update business procedures and documents based on project requirements
  • Provide direction to and oversee the development of direct reports
  • Continuously seek new knowledge and learning to ensure he/she continues to grow in their abilities and contribution, and to avoid their obsolescence
  • Seek out critical feedback and self-reflect to ensure their continued growth and development

Required Qualifications
  • Four-year college degree in an engineering or engineering technology discipline
  • Minimum of five years progressive engineering experience
  • Excellent leadership ability, including the proven ability to build consensus across multi-functional groups
  • Strong continuous improvement mindset and experience

Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced degree in the one of the degrees noted under Required Qualifications
  • More than five years progressive engineering experience in support of manufacturing operations
  • Experience and accomplishment in the following areas:
    • Process control design or technical oversight of complex mechanical, chemical or thermal systems.
    • Certified Lean Six Sigma Black Belt and/or Reliability Engineer.
    • Total Productive Maintenance.
    • Value Stream Mapping.
    • Change over reduction (SMED).
    • Engineering economic analysis/capital project and investment analysis.
    • Capital equipment throughput analysis.
    • Simulation modeling.
    • Experience in shipping, manufacturing, maintenance, or supervision / management of same.
    • Highly proficient in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio), SharePoint and databases.
  • Project management training and/or experience
  • Professional Engineering (PE) license
