Agency Description
The Philadelphia Water Department is a municipal department of approximately 2500 employees working in all facets to provide water/wastewater treatment services to the City of Philadelphia and the surrounding counties.
This public education position is located at the historic landmark Fairmount Water Works (FWW), the nation's first successful urban water supply facility, and now the public education destination of Philadelphia Water. Public education duties include assisting all visitors, children, and adults, in developing an appreciation for the history of the site through developed materials and tours, and the operation of interactive displays.

The primary duties of student employees include assisting in the presentation of water and watershed environmental education programs, materials, and activities both at the FWW and as part of outreach efforts in the community. The FWW education unit has developed a suite of lessons and activities, including Water in Our World, Seeing Is Believing, Building As Machine, The Art and Science of Water, and A Drinking Water Mystery. The successful candidate will be asked to conduct the above lessons, and others, daily to students K- 12th grade.
Competencies, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
The successful candidate must have an interest in and/or background in elementary, secondary, and/or special education. The successful candidate will be a team player, bring enthusiasm and energy to the position and be able to be flexible, as every day and every group is unique. Please note that due to the location, at the edge of the river, the building is prone to flooding. All systems are checked, including air and water. Some people with allergies may be sensitive to the environment. Proof of Covid19 vaccination is required. The position will be in person and virtual. The Fairmount Water Works is located at 640 Water Works Drive, in East Fairmount Park, at the gateway to the Schuylkill Banks trail (aka The Circuit).
Work-Life
Working hours are generally 37.5 hours per week but can be flexible. This position may include remote work days, but schedules will be discussed during the interview.
Preferred Majors – Education, Marketing, Communication, Elementary Education, Hospitality Management, English Art, History, Environmental Science.

Salary Range: $18 Undergraduate $20 Graduate Students
